Spearfish Canyon, Black Hills of South Dakota - Wow - Spectacular!

We have been on a week's vacation out in the Black Hills. Wow, what a spectacularly beautiful area!:D

Earlier this week we went rydin' on the Iron Mountain Road, by Mount Rushmore, Needles highway, etc.

The Black Hills are the "greenest" we have seen them with all the rain (and snow from the previous winter).

Yesterday my brother-in-law, Jeff, and I rode from Rapid City to Sturgis (we also stopped at the Indian Motorcycle Dealer to check them out) and then to Spearfish. We went back through Spearfish Canyon -- a "must do" if you're out this way! Here's a few pics for you -- enjoy!:D:D:D

Awesome!

I'm totally jealous! With Spyderfest back in April, and the recent Durango Owners Event, Black Hills isn't in the cards for me this summer. But all those rydes you mentioned are DEFINATELY on my (Spyder) bucket list. I've been there via camper when the kids were younger. But I haven't been there yet on my Spyder.

Black Hills

My Wife and I were there for three days over the 4th and had some great rides , we rented a cabin south of Deadwood , the highlight of our trip was getting caught in a traffic jam of cars and about 100 buffalo it could have turned into a lowlight but we made it out with great memories .

It is some great scenery. We were just there a few weeks ago. Devils tower is neat also. Check out the badlands on your way home:2thumbs: thanks for sharing the photos

Great photos. Keep them coming. Also agree, make sure you go through the Badlands on your way back--if you have not already done so.

It looks different from each direction. We managed two separate trips through on our recent trip. The Cedar Pass Lodge in the Badlands has great Indian Fry Bread and Indian Taco's. Worth a stop for a meal on the return trip.

Agreed - great food and a nice cool spot from the heat of the day:yes:

Hi fellow Spyderlovers....thanks for your comments!:D:thumbup:

Here's a few more pics of our July 4th ryde through the Needles highway, Mount Rushmore, and the Iron Mountain Road (17 miles with 314 curves, 14 switchbacks, 3 pigtails, 3 tunnels (framing Mount Rushmore), and 2 splits (single lanes through the trees) - fun ryde! :D:D:D:D

Enjoy! :ohyea::ohyea::ohyea::ohyea::ohyea: BTW....we're blessed with great weather!!

Pic 1 - Approaching Mount Rushmore (rode in thru lane, cars were lined up to go in about 1/2 mile long)
Pic 2 - Keystone (good pizza and ice cream - Jane's Pizza)
Pic 3 - Single lane split on the Iron Mountain Road
Pic 4 - One of the tunnels framing Mount Rushmore we rode through
Pic 5 - Iron Mountain Road with Mount Rushmore in the far distance in the tree gap

Black Hills

We were also in the Black Hills over the 4th. We were at our cabin, we are about 1 mile north of 3Forks on 385. We were sitting on our lower deck, which sits just above the highway. Saw lots of Spyders , but couldn't get anybody to wave at us! I must of looked like a crazed woman standing out there waving with both arms going whenever a Spyder went by!! Hoped some one would see us and stop up!! Glad you had a great weekend. The Black Hills is our favorite place to ride. The roads you listed are some of our favs. There is also Nemo Road, Vanocker Canyon, Neck Yoke to name a few. And yes the Hills are probably the greenest we have seen them for a few years.

We just got back from Spearfish Canyon yesterday via Nemo road and Vanocker Canyon (included a stop in Sturgis). What is the Neck Yoke :dontknow::dontknow:you described as I don't remember seeing that the several times we've rode that way. Great area....the second pic in my first post of this thread had a pic of Nemo Road (the rim rock and/or bluffs).

Sorry we missed seeing you and didn't wave if we passed your way! :yikes::yikes:

Nice! Best time for Ryding is anytime 'cept Sturgis week - then it's wall to wall bikes creeping around the corners.

Icing on the Cake and.......more pics

Hi fellow Spyderlovers,

The icing on the cake was I got the best MPG during the ryde through Spearfish Canyon -- 42.6 MPG :D:D:D:D:D

Today we rode on my favorite road (Iron Mountain Road) and then to Custer State Park. Had lunch at Custer (Buglin Bull Restaurant and Sports Bar)

Almost charged by a bull buffalo on Iron Mountain Road near Custer State Park.:yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes:

Enjoy the pics.....

That's one of the great benefits of riding in the Hills. Spyders just love this elevation and I frequently get over 40 mpg. Do watch out for the buffalo. Our Spyder was destroyed and I was banged up pretty good by a herd bull that didn't like the sound of the hindle exhaust. We give them a wide berth, it just isn't worth it. Enjoy your stay, this is a great place to ride.
