• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Spare Key Fiasco ....

The non chip key is a good idea. The non chip will open the back trunk on the RT & RT-S. Keep spare chip in trunk hidden. Store non chip in mini trunk in front of seat. Liner comes right out. Tape non chip under liner. Non chip is thin won't show. If found by unauthorized will not start machine. Time is against thief. Looking for chip key is time consuming.
Having trouble finding blank. Locksmith could not find on nor could his distributer.
If I remember right, its a triumph key blank that works.

Key Facts...

Hello All:

Let me start by telling you all that I am a professional Locksmith working in Haines City, FL (863) 422-6778 if you have any questions you want answered. Now I usually do not work on these I am a commercial, residential, a safe Locksmith. But I have some experience with auto, and motorcycle in the past, and have a association member that is the top of the trade with the transponders (he teaches other locksmiths).

Yes there is a non transponder (Chip) key, it is Ilco Key Blank # "X270". When cut to your mechanical cuts it will operate all of the bike except start it. This you should be able to get just about any where you get keys copied I recommend a locksmith but any place should be able to do it. They just have to carry the blank. Ilco is the biggest key manufacturer in the world.

There is an after market Transponder (Chip) Key, it is a Silca Key Blank # "ZD24RT5" (it has a key ring hole). It has to be modified slightly but will work. Yes there is a limit to the # of working keys (I am not sure of the # for the Can-Am's it varies) usually when you add the last one the first one drops out.

Now the number of working different keys may be limited but there is all so a cloning process that makes that mute. Instead of each key being different to the computer, a cloned key is as far as the computer is knows is the same as the original.

I hopes this helps and again if there are any questions please feel free to post here or call me at 863-422-6778 I will be happy to help.

Lock of Luck

Good info, thanks

I'm curious to know if you were to permanently mount a key, secure & out of sight, near the ignition switch, could you then have non-chip blanks cut that would work? If so, you might be able to get replacements for just a few dollars each.

Just a thought...

This has been on my mind for over a year..only one drawback:

It defeats the whole reason for the security system.

But..someone would have to be very familiar with Spyders to be able to fire one up in a hurry!

I like the idea of storing a chipped key in a frunk or brunk(back trunk) and having an extra non chipped taped somewhere by the oil tank. This sounds like a weiner!:2thumbs:

EDIT: Group buy?? if you buy 50, they are $.79 ea!!(non chipped) I would like a couple. We should be able to get enough folks together from SL and ST to justify purchasing 50.

Place your spare key in a small baggy and keep it inside your lower body cavity. Problem solved.

I had a non chipped key made and used a magnetic key box, placed it on top of the frame under the steering box its a bit to reach. Now its covered with dust and hard to see hasnt moved in many miles

I just had a key made for my RT. It will only fit the lock on the back trunk. Tomorrow some double sticky velcro and spare key goes into trunk and trunk key gets put away on bike. Anybody stealing a Spyder better not be in hurry. Does not make a good gettaway bike. :gaah:

Waiting for the 'puter to boot up, you would have enough time for a cup o' coffee, phone call to cops, and a stroll around the block!

You can order either the TMC1/X270 or ZD24RDP at the folloing site:

http://www.keys4urride.com/triumph-c-37.html

The only problem of order bulk off of the internet is you still will have to get them cut, and do not forget shipping and handling.

Every place I know will still charge you the same price to cut your blank as they will for their key (with no guarantee's).

So you are not really ahead that way.nojoke

Answer NO. :(

Sorry but the transponder (Chip) has to be in front of ignition and only about 1 inch out. That is why the after market key needs to be modified, we drilled the cavity a little deeper to get it closer to the ignition. Close is not good enough it has to be right in front.nojoke

Michael,

I did a search for "ZD24RTS" on the Silca website and didn't find anything. Any further advice on getting one of these? Thanks.

Mike

Or you could get a non-chip spare key that will work to open the trunks, and lock your second chipped key away(front or back trunk).
You could tape the spare non-chip key to the inside of the front oil tank cover in case of emergency---to unlock the trunk and retrieve your chipped key.C-YA RL
I just did this... Had the non-chipped key made at Rick's Lock & Key for $3. Works on all the RT locks.

Mike:

I suggest you find a local locksmith. If he does not have them
He should be able to get them. Like I said before getting off the net
Is no going to safe anything, your going to have cut and most
Are going charge you their regular price.

I have no Locksmith's who can do any "different " locks-- standard Honda is even hard for them-- This is a problem!!!! Several hours to a big town and I sure cant send off my Spyder key!!!!! No way!!!!! Gotta be better way- love the IPS deal but everyone will eventually figure it out!!!!! HArdto know what to do--- I had a slalesman lose a Piggaio key and he got the blank but no one could cut it---- took 2 years for me to find a place who knew a place that might cut it- this was an all day trip too!! UGH Joan
