Something Must Be Broken - Probably Won't Take It In For Fixing

Whatever was sucking up my fuel prior to my trip must be broken because I went 2,241 miles in a route that took us through Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, back through Mississippi and Alabama to Tennesee, through a corner of North Carolina, then back home to Georgia, all on 68.224 gallon of fuel. A whopping 32.85 mpg! I'll take it.

I rode it easy on the Natchez Trace, getting better than 37 mpg, and rode it hard on the Tail of the Dragon (and the lead-up roads and Cherohala Skyway afterwards). Only once did I get less than 30 mpg, but it was sooo close that it didn't matter, and it didn't occur during the hard riding segments.

I'll have a few other points to make about the Spyder, trip, and responses by onlookers after I settle in and catch up on being away for a week. ...Gnirtsnod

Sounds like a great ryde. We also get good mileage with our 2012 RS as high as 40 mpg (rare) but in the mid 30's no problem. Seems the higher we keep the rpm's and run the open roads the better. We did make some mods which help and now get great mileage for a roadster...ryde on..!! hyea:

This was my first time doing the Tail on three wheels. I stayed right with the Dyna
Wide Glide and Goldwing in front of me, and they were being pretty aggressive. I don't need to push it any harder than I did, but I know I could. ...Gnirtsnod

I think the higher rpms helped. I would be interested in what mods you did to improve mileage.

I've bumped my revs up the scale a bit. I'm keeping them at or above 4,000 rpm now; I want to keep my clutches happy! hyea:
I've only noiticed a fuel mileage decrease so far though. :shocked:

Try at or above 5000--that's where I am at most of the time now.

Something Must Be Broken

A short time ago, someone posted that they ease out on the clutch, slowly accelerate in first. In second they would twist on the right grip a little harder and run it up through the gears from there.

I would be interesting to see DYNO (and or Wind Tunnel) tests run on :spyder2: for fuel consumption gear by gear and also simulating actual conditions for all conditions we encounter on :spyder2:s, City, Country Roads, Freeway, Hot, Moderate, Cold, windy fore and aft and Mountainous conditions.
