• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

So you put a backrest on bike and seat wont stay up for refueling.....

How about the rear trunk lid? Anybody having troubles with this strut?
 
Do you think these gas shocks will work on a Corbin seat? I don't have to lift it often because of having a gas door but when I'm working on the bike and want the seat raised a gas shock would be nice, especially at these prices.
 
Corbin seat with fuel door does wonders, no need to open and close your seat as often, which weakens your shock over time, and we all know that we need to fuel up often :)

Corbin seat does not utilize the shock but does come with a stand to keep your seat propped up.
 
Does anyone have a current part number or link for the strut. Link doesnt seem to work anymore for rockauto.

I don't think Rock Auto carries them anymore, but HERE they are at AutoPartsKart.com for a similar price.

I saw this thread (or a similar one) a few years ago, but never ordered one. I'm glad you posted that question because it reminded me that I want one, too, since I have the Utopia backrest, and have the same problem. ;) There were some comments back then, that if you get a gas lift that is too powerful, it will eventually break the tab on the seat pan. But I think that a 30# lift is probably not too powerful, and this one is the right size to replace the OEM lift (17.2" extended).

Yeah, I was trying to find it on RockAuto but couldnt find it. I knew I could find one for around $25. But when they listed the one from RA for less than $10, I was going to buy a couple. Looks like a trip to the auto parts store today.

Update

I ordered the RhinoPac 4423 and installed it today. Shipping from Autopartskart.com took only two days. Here are the results....

The OEM gas lift is from www.suspaparts.com, part# C16-27695. They sell them for a whopping $95 each. :shocked: There are no specs on their web site, so I cannot say what the force of the OEM lift is, but when I took it off the seat and measured it, I found the extended length to be 17.7", which is a half inch longer than the 4423. Not a big deal, but if I would be buying a replacement lift again, I'd look for one that is about 18" long. The 4423 has a rated force of 30 lbs. and it does do a better job of holding up my comfort seat with the Utopia Backrest installed. It doesn't swing up by itself when the seat is released, but the seat is easier to lift, and once in the raised position, it does stay solidly in place, unlike with the OEM lift. The 30 lb. lifting force is about right for this application - more force may eventually stress the plastic tab on the seat pan where the upper end of the lift is anchored. Both lifts seem to be of equal quality.

I agree with the OP that this lift offers an added convenience, and I'm happy I ordered it. It was well worth the price of $13 plus $5 shipping. I'm glad someone resurrected this old thread from 2013. :thumbup:

There is only one issue with a new gas strut, you can't disable the seat lock because the seat will pop up everytime you get off. I don't care, the fact that it actually works great, I just half disabled the seat lock.

Cruzr Joe, Based on your numerous comments criticizing people for not going BRP replacement parts. I can't believe that you went this route even if a spare.:joke::yes:
 
Just wanted to post an update to my choice on a replacement strut. I ordered the below strut. I have the Utopia backrest and went with a 35lb strut. Its also a tad longer but no issues in closing it. What i do like about the 35lbs is that once I unlock the seat and pull up on the seat to open it will open slowly by itself and stay up with the backrest.

Since Joe "Strutted" my bike at SpyderFest: the extra weight of the backrest and "Rudolph" (The sheepskin seat cover...) have not affected the ability of the seat to stay up, when asked to do so... :clap:

I did mine in June of last year - used a Stabilus "Lift-O-Mat" shock, part # SG359011. It fit perfectly. It was the exact size, with the same connectors, as the OEM shock, just more powerful. I usually carry my rain gear, bungeed to the passenger grip bars, on the back of my seat. I don't even have to remove the bungee cord for the seat to stay up.

Looks like you found the perfect length (18"), and strength (35 lbs.) for this application. :thumbup:. Wish I'd have found the same one before buying mine. Thanks for posting the link. The RhinoPac 4423 works much better than the OEM strut, but it's just a tad too short and a tad too weak. ;)

Yeah, when I was looking on the web site and punched in the data it came down to 2. Both were basically the same except the other was 30lbs. I liked the idea of it raising a bit higher. So I just took a chance on the 35 lb one. I did this based on a few that have stated that even at 30lbs they sometimes had to help it up. All in all I will stick with the 35lbs. With a backrest I believe its the correct lbs.[emoji106]
