• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

So it's my turn... (DPS issues)

So I haven't had any steering problems in the two years I have owned my Spyder. With about 22,700 on the odometer I decided to bite the bullet and get the DPS update done along with the second update.

So the dealer went to reprogram the DPS unit and it wouldn't take the software so they had to replace the unit.

So after being in the shop for a month we went an hour away to our dealer to pick her up. Yes, they did a test ride on it as I had asked them to, but only about a mile or so.

About 8 miles away from the dealer we stopped for gas. I had noticed twice when I steered that it was nice and easy to steer but it seemed to stop or lock just momentarily (less than a second) on me, but I thought it might be my imagination. Then about 9 miles from the gas station on the way home IT happened.....

VSS FAULT.... CHECK ENGINE....DPS FAULT....LIMP HOME MODE.....

We were on a state highway through the delta where the road is less than perfect and there is little to no shoulder. Traffic was whizzing by a mere 5 feet away at 60MPH+. It took us about 10 minutes to get it turned around then we limped it about 17 miles back to the dealer at about 40MPH....

GRR!!! :gaah:

Yep, my problem happened after the updates. I never threw any codes though:dontknow: I know the exact feeling - the lockup didn't last long at all and I thought it was my imagination but when it happened a second time I got nervous.

When it happened to you, did you feel a "pop" or a "clicking" sensation once you got it out of the unlocked feeling? When it happened to me and I forced the bars to turn back it "popped" or maybe a better word - "clicked" cuz it wasn't loud but I felt it "click" back into place.

Glad you made it back to the dealer safely. So maybe time to call Carlo and file a report w/ the NHTSA.

That is really too bad. Really. I never have thrown any codes with mine so maybe you have a fixable version of the problem. Mine is more like the click or pop when it frees up. Very unpredictable. And yes you do convince yourself you don't have a problem until it scares the heck out of you.

I guess it is like having the flu or having the swine flu. They both suck. Not that I have ever had either.

Oh Yeah. And that extra piece they found in my oil pan was actually from my engine. It seems it is needed to hold an oiler tube in place and with it not in place it allowed too much oil to bypass and hence low oil pressure. We shall see.

I should be out of there on Wednesday and you can take my place.

Good luck.

Be sure you just don't have an unrelated problem. Cascading warnings like that are most often the result of a loose or failed relay. They have not been characteristic of the steering failures...just a "DPS Fault" warning for some of them. Always check the simple stuff first.

DPS-not updated yet--should I?????

Yikes, I've got less than 5000 miles on my 2008 Spyder. Due to some health issues I haven't gotten to ride as much as I would like. And, the DPS warranty note is on the top right corner of the desk.

After reading through many, but not all, of the DPS horror stories, especially from those who are frequent posters, I am wondering what to do?

Am I voiding the warranty if I don't do it. Should I wait until I have a problem?

Suggestions? Thoughts?

Thanks

Glad you got out of it safely, please contact Carlo and file with the NHTSA........

This really shouldn't continue to happen at this point.......

Especially right after a new install.

But I just have to say "that dumb limp mode", putting you in a "deadly spot" right beside traffic.. That sucks..
BRP sucks for "the limp mode". I never want to experience it. It's the dumbest thing BRP ever invented.

Look forward to finding out what caused it.

BRP didn't "invent" limp mode....it's in all modern vehicles.:lecturef_smilie:

:agree:

About a week after my DPS was replaced, I got a "DPS Fault", my first ever scroll message - but it turned out to be a loose fuse in the front (too much rough dirt road riding). Yup, always check the simple stuff 1st, which is why I usually first look in the mirror. :D

I also agree with the comment on Limp Mode. I hope to never have it, but if I do get it more than 2 miles away from my house, it will be a major safety issue.

Glad you are safe and hope it is a quick fix.

Tom

I've experienced that "pop"or "click" in the steering. It's a momentary sticking of the handlebars during a turn. It seems easy to ignor at first, but don't! It's almost always a sign of worse to come. Get it to a dealer, soon!

Well I am not so sure the steering actually locked really. I may call Carlo but I am going to hold off on filing with NHTSA.

Yes, it did suck. But we managed. I too am looking forward to finding out the cause. The dealer told me this was the first they had a problem with the update.

Yeah, Kevin told me it was like an injector or something. That's crazy. Hopefully whatever the problem is they are able to fix it and it'll be ready when my Quantum Blue hood arrives and I can pick them up together.

No, not really sure if I heard a "pop" or a "click". It just felt like I was steering right, it was all smooth, then a little "bump" or "hiccup" for just a half second, then it was fine. I will be holding off on reporting with NHTSA until I know a little more. I might call Carlo though and let him know.

Thank you all for your sympathies and your thoughts. I should have just stuck to my guns and not get it done.

Glad to hear you were able to get it back to the dealer without incident. Hopefully they will get it sorted out for you quickly, and have you back on the road.

SpyderGirl, so sorry to hear of this :(

:agree:

I'm glad you're safe and here is to good luck and good results from BRP and the dealer. Finger Crossed for you!

Cheers and please keep us posted - be safe out there!

as riding season is approach for everyone in the north I wonder how many of these post we are going to see a day :yikes:

Yep - good description - bump or hiccup. Well definitely call Carlo - let him know it happened to you also. even if you held off on the updates, if you had to bring it in for anything else it would have been forced. If they had to hook it up to BUDS, it would have gone in there so it eventually would have been updated.

I think if you call Carlo at least they will have it on file at BRP that another Spyder is doing this. The more info we give them, hopefully the more ammo they have to figure this problem out.

Sorry to hear that

I'm sorry that happened, I hope they are able to figure it out and fix it for you. It seems like this is an issue that just keeps flaring up, I wish they would figure this one out!

DPS Issues

Mine never threw any codes before or after the updates but the problem still exists. Just got a PM from Carlo and I'm in the process of trying to contact him as soon as I can get to a computer that will send out my e-mail. (Is there a DPS unit in my computer too??)

I definitely will call Carlo then. Thanks for the well wishes guys. :)

I have my fingers crossed.
