• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

smoothspyder backrest

Can it be used with the storage unit that replaces the passenger seat?
How does the storage unit mount to the bike? If the bolt holes for the passenger rails are accessible and the storage unit isn't wider than the seat you may be able to install it.

What is the price?
Is there a pre-order list?
I think he is trying to make note of those that send him email messages. Contact info is on his smoothspyder website. When asked during Bike Week about pricing he said he was still waiting on a couple of final quotes but thought that it might be in the area of $500 or slightly higher. In my book a bargain since Can Am wants that for a single backrest without all the adjustment capability.

CJ Jax,

Thank you very much for taking your time and answering all the questions you could, that was very informative......
Sounds like you are sold on the idea, was the construction and quality as good as the concept? was it visibly pleasing?
Hope so, looks great on the web site
Thanks again,
DJ

Hope it is of help, and yes I am sold. Canceled the one I had on order at the dealership (got lucky and it was back ordered since I picked the bike up mid JAN). When I first saw it I was scratching my head wondering why someone would use a backrest that basically wasted the passenger seat. I went over to take a look and Jim explained how it worked and offered to let me have a seat and try it out. It took a second to adjust and I like that the pad itself is adjustable and can be fixed or left semi-loose to keep contact as you move around. It felt great in both the driver and passenger position. The fit and finish is nothing I would be ashamed of putting on my bike, sturdy, well made and good looking. As soon as I get one installed I will post plenty of pictures, impressions, and road test reports.

I'll try to answer all of the questions. Thanks for your help Zuni.

I think the backrest is plenty strong. The brackets and arms are constructed of 3/16" cold rolled steel. It has nylatron washers between the moving parts that bite into the textured powdercoat and hold well.

It should fit both the Mono Cowl and Urban Rack. The Short Rail attaches between the same studs, not sure about that one.
I would say it is easily detachable as things go. Not as easily as BRP's, you will have to remove the passenger grab bars as it sits to the inside of that but there are only 2 hex bolts and it will come right off. You can also eliminate the grab rails if desired and possibly use the tubes to attach saddlebag brackets on.

The price will be similar to the RS/ST model at $465.00, maybe $10-$15 more.

I don't have a pre-order list per-se and would prefer not to be prepaid in case I got killed early or something. If you would Email me I will notify you when they are ready to ship.

Let me know if you have any other questions and I will try to answer them in a timely manner, or Email me. [email protected]

PS. Are you also working on a belt tensioner to reduce the bad vibs. between 67 and 73 mph???

Looks great! I will send email address asap. Also curious about the tensioner in the works.

Thanks
The tensioner is being refined and still in the works.
The one on mine has reduced the vibration by about 50%.

I can drive through the 68-72 MPH range under power without hardly any vibration, but as soon as you back off to a steady speed and not under a load there is still some residual vibration which smooths out after a bit. This is coming off the top of the belt.

My tension is set low at 155 Lbs. with the kriket and off the ground, which is about 650N.
I have heard from a few that have raised theirs up to around 1000N and they tell me their vibration is 95% gone at any speed.

BRP seems to like to set the tension on the low side or even under the spec's from what I've observed, obviously for their comfort and well being and not the consumers.

My 13 ST was at 770N when it should have been 900-1200N.
I would have your dealer check your tension and move it up to just under the maximum range of the spec's.

If you still have vibration after that it should be greatly reduced I would hope.
If a tensioner if still needed then it should be much more effective at cleaning up what's left.

Happy Easter!

I look forward to reviews and lots of photos from those of you that have purchased one! If it looks nice and is sturdy and comfortable, I will definitely be getting one.
