The first prototype F-3 Dual-Mode Backrest is headed to Daytona.

The pad has 2.75" of vertical adjustment and the backrest will adjust from a relaxed passenger position to the drivers position, or anywhere in between utilizing the quick release ratcheting handles.
They should be available sometime next month I'm hoping.

that is one sharp looking backrest. The fact it converts from passenger to driver is really nice feature and with the new ratcheting system a breeze...:2thumbs:

It is excellent.:clap:I got the opportunity to sit on Jim's bike and test it out in person in Daytona. Was happy that my oem driver's backrest was back ordered and that I was able to cancel it. Currently standing impatiently in line for the one from SmoothSpyder. I will provide a complete report a soon as I get it installed.

I'm anxious and still waiting "patiently" on my fabricator to produce the first batch, hopefully this month. Working on the tensioners also.

This is a very interesting product. I prefer this design over BRP's. My only concern would be how strong is it? The BRP unit mounts to the 2 pegs on each side, and the Smoothspyder looks like it mounts to just 1. Is there any chance of this moving if it has a lot of weight up against it? I am 230lb and 6'1", and just want to make sure this is not going to move on it's own.

Any info you could provide would be greatly appreciated. VERY interested in this product.

I seem to remember that the mount attaches via both posts on each side. Should have taken a few pictures but I was busy dragging over everyone else I knew with an F3 to check it out. The set up makes it easily adjustable for driver or passenger with an infinite number of height and angle options. Since we have the RTs and the F3 we will seldom be two up on the F3 but Jim's version is great for when we do with no need to have an extra backrest lying around. It also makes for a great attachment point when putting a travel bag on the back.

I already have the BRP Passenger Short Rail. I really like the way it looks, but according to my wife, the functionality is minimal.

Will the smoothspyder backrest fit over the BRP short rail? Also, is the backrest easily detached or does it require removal of the passenger rails, etc?

I too am VERY interested in this product.

Sure looks like a great design. :firstplace: I know I'm impatient but the wife wants a back rest or she won't ride along.

I know Jim is swamped and will do my best (from memory of looking at it during Bike Week) to answer what I can. I do believe that the mounting uses both of the handrail mounting locations. Are they still accessible with the short rail. My guess is yes and that you have a plug installed in the forward bolt hole. Not sure how it would look though. With the standard rails you really don't notice much. Looking over the website for the earlier model it doesn't mention easy removal as a benefit so I am betting for safety and security the passenger rails would need to come off to remove.
