smell of hot gas

ruthie

GOS member (Girls On Spyders)
After a long ride, when I park in the garage there will be a smell that seem to be hot fuel. Does anyone know what may be the cause of the smell? Most of the time fuel tank low by the time it is parked in the garage.

I have a 2011 RT Limited and I have the same issue if I top off the tank. Even if I ride enough to run the tank down low I will notice a very strong gas smell in the garage the next morning. I was told by other Spyderlovers member in other posts that this happens when the charcoal in the evaporation canister gets saturated with gas by overfilling the tank. It may take a few days for the smell to go away. I proved this by not filling my tank to the top at fuel fillups. Haven't had the smell in my garage since.

Gas smell

I have a 2011 RT SE5 and I to am haveing the same issue and I called my tech at the dealer ship and they told me that is was from over filling the tank which I didn't think I was and he told me that I can replace the canister but that Brp won't cover it . The canister is about $70 . I have found that the warrenty that comes with these bikes really dont' cover much . I have problems with the brakes and making noise since the second week I got it which was april of this year and they won't cover it . I have a noise coming from the belt when I take off and brp doesn't know what to do with it but keep tighting it . I am taking it back again on the 27 of this month and than if it isn't fixed they have one more chance to fix it and if it still isn't it is theirs becuase we have something called the lemon law and I didn't pay thousands of dollars for something to make noise's every time I get on it . If it we're used that would have been diffrent but it is new and only has 2000 miles on it.

I would be looking for another dealer. 2 years (even if it is not enough time) covers any damages caused by the machine itself. If there is damage in the canister BRP would have to replace it under warranty. Also, there have been instances where brakes have been replaced on new machines due to the making noise (I believe they upgrade the pad to a 2nd generation, which yours being an RT 2011 it would have them, so they need to be inspected). And if you get an extended warranty (most are extended up to 3 more years), you are surely to be covered. Don't let the dealer con you on not replacing parts because they are "not under warranty". It sounds like they don't want to go thru BRP on getting claims paid and instead have the customer pay up front. I have heard of one or 2 dealers that would make the customer pay up, then the dealer call them back and say that the claim WAS under warranty, but instead of refunding the money they would give the customer store credit. Thankfully those dealers are no longer around, but I would not be surprised if they still are some doing it.

My dealer changed my brake pads under warranty. He told me BRP will cover pads up to 2,999 miles.

There is the 3 gen brakes that will cure the noise, There it some kind of warranty on them ,
Also the canister IS covered under the Federal Emissions Law.

Gasoline Vapors Are Not Normal

As a husband of a disenchanted 2011 Spyder RT-S owner I've been following this forum trying to get a feel for these spectacular vehicles. As my wifes Spyder has spent almost 30 days in the shop for repairs during the last 2 months I'm starting to think she made a bad purchase and should have just continued riding on 2 wheels. Her Spyder continues having check engine warnings along with several other concerns which have caused loss of power steering assist and limp mode. It seems that the failures have occurred at the worst moments on the 6 lane highways during comuting traffic. We're lucky she has been able to safely get out of traffic without injury. One of our concerns is the severe unburned gas smell that is present whether the Spyder has a full tank or near empty. As I understand the EVAP system is mandated by law to control fuel vapors. If you smell fuel then the system is NOT working. I agree a slight fuel smell may be normal but it appears that some Spyders have a serious defect in the EVAP system. Please understand that unburned fuel can ignite under the right conditions which could cause someones home burning while having a Spyder parked in the garage. For those that have removed the canister you have broken federal law so you might not want to post instructions on how to modify a EPA require system. I know from reading here that there has been fires on Spyders. Why do some of us think that a severe fuel smell is normal? For all of us that have the fuel smell concern we need to contact BRP and complain. When I did BRP said they have never heard of this issue. Really? How can there be posts at several web sites for over 3 years and BRP never hear of this. I've read that Carlo reads forums trying to improve customer relations. They don't want to fix Spyders already on the road because that hurts profits. You watch and see. I bet BRP has been designing a revised EVAP system. Design changes can take years to make it to the streets due to all the red tape. With all that said I'm very happy with all the Spyder Ryders we've met and enjoy going on group Spyder rides. I hope BRP resolves the EVAP system problems so we can continue being part of the Spyder family. Sorry my first post is so negative because riding a Spyder really is a unique experience.

I've also had this problem from day one. My Spyder was in the shop within six hours of taking possession and has been back for this since. My dealer claims to have replaced the cannister and purge solenoid, but the problem persists. My Spyder always smell like gas after a long ryde and I always get five or six drops out of the evap hose once it's parked. I did a burn test on the liquid on my garage floor, but have never been able to get it to light (note-move Spyder first) so I guess that's something. Not sure what the liquid is exactly, but I always have to leave my garage door open for a few minutes after a ryde so the smell doesn't drift into my house. This has been my biggest diappointment with my Spyder, especially with the $$$ I paid for it. The tech at my dealership says he is seeing this alot especially since the summer has been so hot here, but cannot offer any solution. I don't overfill or top off my tank, so I know I'm not the cause of this directly. I'm hoping that this may subside somewhat when we get to cooler weather when perhaps the fuel in the tank may not fet so hot, but I'm now doubtful this will ever go away compltely for me. I agree that BRP needs to step up and address this problem and offer a fix. I sometimes wonder if this is having any affect on my gas mileage also, as I almost always get 25-26 MPG no matter how my ryding style is. Other than this issue though, I am entirely pleased with my experience with my Spyder-it's a great ryde and my wife and I totally enjoy our time RYDING.

Blue Mule

Blue Mule, Have you called BRP about the gas smell? It seems they are unaware how many Spyders have this problem. Please call BRP and tell them your dealer is unabled to correct the concern. The more of us that call the sooner a fix will be available. Hopefully before the emisions warranty expires.

No, but I will either call or E-mail Carlo. Are you getting the drip spots under the evap hase and if so have you tried to light it. Just curious if we have having the exact same symptoms. Sorry to hear about your other problems. Keep your chin up though, once you get your problems solved you won't regret buying the Spyder. Just hope you have a good dealer with a good tech. Make sure you post thru the process, would like to hear your results. By the way, Placerville is beautiful country. I grew up in Willows (near Chico) and my parents live in Auburn. It's been awhile since I've been there and I'm jealous of the great rydes you must get to go on. Would love to rydes the Sierra's sometime and go to Tahoe. Texas is flat and hot for sure! Best of luck!

Spyders (MC) NOT covered under WV Lemon Law

it is theirs becuase we have something called the lemon law

I had originally bought a 2010 RT-S from the dealership in New Martinsville WV back in May 2010. Long story short, I had a WV lawyer on retainer & sadly, WV's Lemon Law
:lecturef_smilie:DOES NOT COVER MOTORCYCLES, INCLUDING THE SPYDER.:lecturef_smilie:

Mind telling us which dealer your having your issues with?

Well...I'm not going to name the dealer by name yet, but if you see where I live should narrow it to the 2-3 dealers in the Sacramento area. And motorcycles and all other on road vehicles ARE covered by California lemon laws...which state that if a "vehicle has been in for repairs 4 or more times for any concern" which was recently updated from "4 or more times for the same concern" it is eligable to be reaquired by the manufacturer. Or if "the vehicle has been out of service and can not be used for 30 calender days during the warranty coverage"...So dealers that put warranty repairs on the "back burner" just hurt themselves because they only get a total of 30 days of down time during the initial 2 year base warranty.
If dealers want to sell these things they better have a trained staff large enough to keep these things on the road and out of the service dept. So you see...here in CA its 3 strikes and your out or 30 total days.

Had gas fumes and actual gasoline leeking onto ground

I had this issue of fumes for a long time and then in the last 3 months or so it became really bad and gasoline leaking down the side of the Spyder ( I did post about this a little while ago). I fnally discovered that the retaining rubber "O" ring under the fuel pump module was letting gas leak by especially when I hit the brakes hard. Earlier I had checked the the evaporation canister and could smell absolutely nothing coming from it. I have always filled my tank the same way and never believed I had overfilled it. I ordered the retaining kit from my dealer and my son and I was able to change it and that fixed my fume and gas leaking problem. This probably is not your problem since I have never seen any one else with the same problem I just described......but thought I would repost my "fix" since a lot of people seem to be plagued with the gas fume problem. Something else to check if everything else doesn't show the problem.:dontknow:

Emissions Warranty Should Cover Repairs

I just find it odd that a BRP rep could tell me that he never heard of a excessive fuel smell concern and dealers are unable to correct the condition while the vehicle is still under waranty. Why do we have to fix a problem that should be covered by emission warrantys that likely vary from state to state but probably excede the base warranty by months if not years.

One of our concerns is the severe unburned gas smell that is present whether the Spyder has a full tank or near empty. As I understand the EVAP system is mandated by law to control fuel vapors.

I've owned and ridden many motorcycles over the years, Japanese and European, the Canadian Spyder is my first North American vehicle. None of my bikes had an evap canister fitted, a simple overflow tube running from the neck of the refuelling projection on the tank to a safe place away from the exhaust pipes is all they had. It took care of careless over-filling or expansion of the petrol through ambient heating, etc. There was no smell of fuel from any of my bikes.

But now I have a Spyder and my garage stinks of petrol vapour for at least three days after my RT has been put away. I am thankful that my garage is free standing and not attached to the house, not because I think there is a fire risk but because of the smell.

According to Wikipedia an evap cannister becomes charged with petrol fumes at the end of a period with the engine running as heat from the engine passes into the fuel, making it more volatile. At start-up these fumes are fed into the engine manifold and burnt. In a sealed system the vapors are contained and there should be practically no smell. Why we have such a strong fuel smell from the Spyder is unclear. :dontknow:

I have a 2011 and have this problem as well. It seems to me that I have more of a smell as someone else stated after a good ride or after the fuel in the tank is down about a quarter and sloshes around when driving. Very Strong fuel smell for a couple of hours after a ride. If I just fill and go back to the garage, even if I top off as we are not supposed to, I do not get the smell.

Yup. I get that. I sorta imagined the fuel in the tank being warmed by its close proximity to the engine block, plus the airflow through the trike runs from engine to fuel. When you come to a halt the fumes from the warm(?) petrol are given off into the confines of the garage, hence the stink. :sour:

BRP came up with a re-routed canister overflow hose, that routed it to the airflow, like every other bike made. The original was a 2" curved piece of trash, ending in the hot zone under the seat. Make sure you have the update.

How do I tell if I have the update? I have a 2011 RT Limited. Is there something I can look for that can easliy identify the update without taking off the panels?

Call your dealer they can run you vin# and tell you if it was done. I would think that an 2011 would have had that updated from the factory.:dontknow:
