• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

SM5 owners, check your clutch handle switch!

I just had a problem yesterday that cropped up and worried me.

I use to be able to pull the clutch and this would cut off the cruise control. It did not do that yesterday. I was on the freeway in 5th with the cruise on. I started hitting a bit of slower traffic and while I did not need the breaks I just figured I would down shift and expected the cruise to cut off. It didn’t and the engine revved up when I pulled the clutch. I had to use the break to cut it off rather than fumble for the switch.

Then when I got off the freeway I noticed I was having a little trouble finding neutral. A little more than usual. Not sure this switch has anything to do with that though.

When I got home I then noticed I could not start it when in gear! Normally you can start it in gear if you pull the clutch. NO JOY. Something was wrong.

Turns out it was pretty simple. Look behind your clutch handle. There is a switch there with a small metal actuator. Mine over time became bowed back and thus the switch was not engaging. All I had to do was bend it flat and voila! Fixed.

Also be aware that depending on where you have the clutch handle dial set (mine is on 3) that it hits the switch at a different amount of pull back in the handle. On 3 I have to pull it back more than 1/2 way before it hits the switch.

So be aware of your clutch switch! It has the follow functions:
1) You should be able to start when in gear by pulling the clutch.
2) It should turn off the cruise control when you pull in the clutch.
3) I think it might have another function and that is with turning on the clutch assist system. This is a vacuum system that assists with pulling in the clutch. However the service manual does not state it plays are part in this. So I am not 100% sure. All it says is to make sure clutch assist is working, is with the bike off it should feel harder to pull in the clutch than with it running. To be honest I am not sure I can tell a difference so I may have to investigate that and make sure that is working.

Hope this tip helps someone.

Clutch assist is a function of vacuum controlled by the ECM and only works with the engine running. Clutch assist does not function above about 4,000 rpm.

Good to know thanks.

Service manual says I should feel a difference on how hard it is to pull the clutch handle when it is running vs not running. Is this a subtle difference? As I really cant tell a difference.....

I guess I might have to buy the vacuum/pressure pump tool (at Harbor frieght for $40 and I need it anyway for fluid replacement) to diagnose it per the service manual as I am worried it is not working. If it is not working, it's been that way since day one and 7500 miles!
