• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

SM 5 clutch master cylinder fluid

I was a little over due for fluid change; I have 17000 miles. Removed cover on reservoir, fluid and reservoir both pitch black. Removed fluid, cleaned reservoir with q-tips and refilled with fresh DOT 4 brake fluid. Then bled clutch master cylinder. All the fluid bled was normal clean looking brake fluid??? Where is all this black coloration coming from??? Would seem that if it were from deteriorated o-rings in clutch master cylinder that the fluid down stream from master cylinder to the slave cylinder on the side of the motor would be discolored also.

Clutch operates properly, doesn't slip and has always engaged at the very end of lever travel since purchased new in Feb 2015.

On other bikes there is a mild discoloration in the reservoir but this is also the same color down stream to the slave cylinder @ the motor. Why is the spyder different in this respect??
:dontknow::gaah:

Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air it's exposed to over time and that causes discolouration that is gradually pumped thru the lines, so I reckon you were just lucky in doing your fluid change before the discolouration had spread thru the whole system - or that due to the significantly greater volume of fluid in the system due to the extra volume needed by ABS, you just didn't bleed enough fluid thru the system to get the discoloured stuff that was working its way down from the master cylinder! :sour:

Or not.... ;)

Believe it or not this is not unusual on the spyder. BRP uses rubber seals and orings that break down pretty quickly. Keeping the fluid flushed seems to help but if left untouched destroys the slave and master assemblies.

Are you aware of a rebuild kit for the clutch master cylinder??? Preferably from another manufacturer:pray:

I have spent a lot of time on Bremo's website, cant find a rebuild kit for the clutch master cylinder. Guess when it gives up the ghost will have to bite the bullet and pay the BRP price:gaah::gaah::gaah: But sure hope it happens while under warranty

I had problems with my 2011 back in August.
It sounds like anyone with the SM5 needs to keep this on their regularly scheduled maintenance.

No "kit" that I'm aware of. However, a local has helped with 2 different slave rebuilds using aflas replacement soft parts with great success so far. Nothing with the master that I'm aware of.
