SITS and New DPS

Tina and I made it home safe and sound from SITS---- me with a new DPS.

I usually shy away from getting any major work done while so far from home, but my 3 week old DPS went out while we were ryding up on the Cherahola(sp?) --- we took a very 'special' route from way up there to get back to the RRI... will post pics later--- the only other rider out here crazy enough to take their Spyder on the roads we went on would be Seth-----

Anyhow---- My steering got really bad--- was okay at low speed-- but at 40+ it was really giving tons of resistance to my input--- got a workout for sure. Much more of that and my arms would have looked like Peoria Firefighters...:roflblack:

Alcoa had already done about 40 DPS replacements this week, so 1 more was easy for them to fit in. The Tech--'Corbin' was really good at swapping them by now, but my female spline had some burrs on the end of it--- probably from the previous install 3 weeks ago. I helped him by holding the bars and moving them in various positions while he worked like the devil to get the new DPS all the way on the shaft.

He said mine was the most difficult he had to do because of the burred spline--- but they've gotten really good at doing this. Took him around 2 hours total.

His test ryde was only around the parking lot. I jumped on and hit it really fast and hard on some roads behind the dealership.

At first it was really different--- the low speed turning seems a bit harder--- but the at speed (20+) is AWESOME! I notice it's much easier to turn-- even when going really fast.

We made it all the way home (around 600 miles for me) and this DPS is SOLID! I ran er 90 for a good 2 hours, passing and weaving and she never felt better!

I would NOT wait to have this update done. If you wait and get into a wreck, you may have no legal ground as you've been made legally aware of the problem and the solution.

Get er' done--- you won't be disappointed!

Waiting here too. 5th in line at the dealer. Local dealer is doing Spyders bought there first and getting "alien" bikes last. Have to go 60+ miles to another more professional dealer. :gaah:

I'm glad you are home safe and even more pleased that the DPS work went well. I know on my RS-S the new box felt really strange at first but I got used to it pretty fast. For that one it's cool, and I know my Wife especially will love the new feel.

But 14 will not be getting done. Just my preference. It's perfect the way it is and I don't want that feeling changed. If it messes up like yours did then I'll have no choice, but not now. Of course my 2 machines are still pretty new so it may not be a fair comparison. Either way, 14 stays the way she is. New shocks this week though, RT shocks. Pretty stoked about that! Anyway, glad yer home dude! :D

Just be aware--- if you take her in for any service--- they're gonna swap it whether you want it done or not. That is my understanding of this recall--- it is NOT considered 'optional'... you will have to have it done sometime.

You know I asked about that, and my dealer said that they would not do anything that I did not want done. now whether that means I have to sign a waiver is yet to be seen. But they told me flat out that if I did not want the DPS done they would not do it. They would only build and mount the new shocks. I told them that if they had to do the DPS they could simply hand me the shocks and I will install them myself and they said not to worry, we will not do the DPS if you don't want it. So I'm taking them at their word!

There is just no need for it man. The thing is perfect right now. I don't want that hyper, over-senitive feeling on 14. ANd that's what I noticed on the RS-S. The steering is just too sensitive now. Alot of guys have called it precise, but to me it's hyper-senitive. I don't like it. I got used to it but I don't like it. I took it for a second ride after the initial installation, and after just getting off of 14 after an epic carve up of some local turf, and I just don't like it! I don't want to do that to 14...

You know what it reminds me of? It almost feels like it did when I tried to defeat the stupid nanny! Yes I did! :roflblack:

I pulled the sesnors back and tied them off very carefully. I wrapped it up and went for a test. The steering felt down right dangerous it was so hyper! So I took it straight home and pulled the DPS fuse, and of course the bike went nuts throwing codes. So I put everything back, reset the computer and all went back to normal. Then I go and get the DPS done - And I am feeling that sensation again! Not nearly as bad of course, but that floaty, over-senitive sensation just doesn't do it for me. :yikes:

I don't find it over-sensitive at all......to each his own I guess... your dealer is giving you some leeway... but that may eventually run out.

I thought my new DPS 3 weeks ago was good to go too--- until Friday on the Cherahola----

Good luck and keep a close eye on your current DPS.

Thanks for the info FireFly. I am still going to wait for a little while on ours, but it is good to know that it appears to be working well for those who have had it done. I must also say you were pretty brave to have it done while on a trip in the smokies; however, anything would probably have been better than what you were battling with.

I wish you continued success with it.

Believe me-- I really would have preferred to wait--Getting things done on a trip isn't something I recommend doing--- if it ain't broke-- don't fix it! I just I had planned on waiting until December--- but really glad as my trip home would have been pretty hard to make home.....

I'm confused. Was the faulty DPS the old style or the new one installed on a recall ?

I know they are! I'm kinda lucky because if they were going to try and force me I would stay away. But at this point they know that and are not pushing. I love the feel that this bike has and refuse to have it ruined or changed. I did 200 miles today which included my favorite twisties and a jaunt down the coast. It was fantastic. This bike tracks like it's on rails. No way am I changing that now.

I also understand that things can change quickly and without warning, so I will indeed keep my eye on things. I promise!!

Did you get the RT shocks on then?

I am really glad to hear all the positive responses to the 2G DPS. It seems like the biggest apprehension people have in getting it done is hearing that the new DPS does not respond like the one they are happy with. Of course it doesn't. It's a new design. The steering with the new unit is virtually effortless. It goes where you want it to go, when you want it to go. It will take a small time to retrain yourself, but when you got the Spyder you had to learn a whole new technique in steering. What's the fear of getting it even better?
This forum was full of posts about the problems and fears about the old DPS. People up in arms that BRP was not getting anything done about the problem. Well, BRP DID something about it, and now there are the skeptics all over again. Makes you wonder what people REALLY want! If you refuse to get it done and you have an accident because the old unit failed, you have no one but yourself to blame. My 2 cents.

That's a risk I'm willing to take. You don't know me or my Spyder. We have developed a very spirited relationship and I know this machine very well. I love it the way it is. I don't want it changed. That is my right as the owner of this bike. When I am engaged in a ride through the terrain I ride through, the margin for error is extremely small. When I do it with the aggression that I do it with that margin shrinks even more. Before I hit this strip I always do a pre-check to make sure everything is go before I enter. When you ride this way you have to be committed and confident in your equipment. I am. After that first DPS change with the RS-S, I know that I could never charge like that again if I did it on 14. That is not something that is acceptable to me. So it's not going to happen until this unit fails. PERIOD.

I for one never complained about the DPS. I was fortunate I guess in that I did not experience the problems that many seemed to. Both of my machines were perfect. Now my RS-S is not the same nor will it ever be, and I don't care for it now. If you like yours, I'm very glad that it worked for you. My RS-S is now compromised. With all due respect, I will not let that happen to 14.

I agree, Dudley. For those of us who have had no problems with our Spyders, it's understandable that we feel we don't want or need any change whatsoever since we're happy and the familiar is, well, familiar. When I had Cowtown do my regular service and install all the updates I was instantly dismayed to find the steering felt different - quicker to respond, which seemed quite scary since I had a 180 mile ride home on twisty roads. I have to say, though, after about 30 miles of cornering, I never gave it another thought. Now I can't even remember what the old steering felt like, but the "new" feel seems great.
I have an another appointment with them in a week to get the new DPS installed and it sounds like there might be another small learning CURVE (pun intended) but I'll certainly feel better and safer knowing I'm up-to-date and in compliance with all recalls.

Now, getting back to the shocks! The dealer unfortunately messed up on the order and did not order everything they needed to build out the new ones! They got the wrong end caps or something as well. Stuff happens, I understand that we are doing something that is not exactly by the book! So they are getting the rest of what they need to build them out and they will call me when they are ready for install. It's a bummer, but I can wait. At least the bike isn't stuck in the shop! :D

:agree: If it is known that the old one is faulty, what is the excuse NOT to have it done? I guess people want to wait until they have a problem...not a good idea...
