Silly Trailer Question--

My wife and I were looking at a 6.4x12 utility trailer to buy yesterday to pull our 2012 Spyder RTS around on, for servicing and pulling it to Spyderfest. Has a good price on it of $1300.00 ===but looking at the owner's manual online last night it says that the trailer is NOT to be pulled faster than 60mph- that tire blowout can occur etc., Are they kidding me?

SO---who sells a reasonably priced trailer that will only be used for hauling the Spyder around at times---that can travel today's highway speeds (70-75) and do so safely?

I think they said the trailer tires 15" - are 8 ply tires. I thought that would be GOOD.

Most likely a CYA statement because legally NO trailer should be towed faster than 55 in many states. 8 ply x 15 with a spyder on them. I'd be more concerned about axle rating than tire speed with 8 ply's.

Bottom line is that you are looking at a utility trailer. Some are strictly made for light-utility work and not intended for long-haul travel; as you intend.

As the previous comment made, I would worry about its overall axle-weight limit. In addition, pay attention to the gate/ramp you'll use with it, otherwise you may not get the Spyder onto the trailer (because of the pitch of the ramp to the trailer-bed not clearing the Spyder's low clearance).

For reference, my trailer has radial tires on it; and is designed for longer-haul travel.

Good luck in your venture in finding a trailer. They come in handy. Be sure to look around a a lot, there are plenty of places selling them, and often several used for sale at great prices.

Not so silly..!!

With 15" 8 ply's speed would not be a problem. As stated weight capacity is more the issue. Also your securing possibilities are to be considered. A pic would help, many have trailers and could better suggest seeing what we are talking about..:dontknow:

I had a Master Tow single axle utilty that I used for hauling the Spyder. Worked great and I could do highway speeds. I would let the gate down and jack up the front end to make it easier to drive the Spyder on to the trailer. Used adjustable straps to tie down the Spyder and had three pieces of 2x4 that I screwed down in front of the front wheels and behind the rear wheel. The Spyder didn't move.

Empty weight is 750 pounds-

single axle--rated at 3500 pound cambered axle

We were going to add an e-trex attachment system and wheel strap system to secure the Spyder.

The rear ramp gate is 4 feet long.

Suggest going to a farm supply store, most have a good selection of trailers. Farm and Fleet, Rural Supply are two of them.

I have a 6x10 trailer made by "Down to Earth" The specs on it are almost exactly the same as you state. I don't remember any words about speed except that to obey the laws. I trailered the Spyder (RT) to Spyderfest last year with out any problem and will again this year. I mostly drove with the traffic up to 70MPH. So I agree with a previous post that it was a CYA type statement.

I tow with a 3/4 ton so the hitch is higher which helps with the loading and unloading. I also extended the ramp by about a foot.

8 feet is a little short for a Spyder, it'll hang over in the front, back or both.

There are tons of trailer mfgrs. Although I personally have never heard of Carry On, their web site shows they have a full product line and 7 factories. Apparently not a fly by night outfit. Call their customer support and really push them with your questions, and especially about the quality and brand of tires. My gut tells me it is just CYA.

I have a 7x10 Interstate one axial trailer. I have towed my Spyder to Spyderfest, tunnel of trees, and for service. Works great.
