Side view mirror bulb replacement

While on my first long trip on my 2012 RTS I noticed that when I turned the left turn signal on, it would flash a lot quicker than when I turned the right signal on. At one of the gas stops that I made I found that the turn signal bulb in the left side view mirror was not lighting up. How does one go about getting to the bulb to replace it? Is it a fairly easy process? I didn't see any screws holding the cover on so I'm not sure how to go about getting to the bulb to replace it without damaging the plastic covers.

I could be wrong, but I thought that the RT front turn signal lights were LEDs. I f that is the case you can't simply replace the bulb. First thing I would do would be to remove the mirror and see if the wiring connector came loose. If that isn't it, I would visit my dealer.

:agree: My 2010 had the same issue where one of the turn signals would flash a lot faster than the other. If I recall correctly, one of my LED connectors was not completely wired right. It might also be a loose connection if you haven't added any LED or extra lights.

The 2012 RT service manual says they are incadesent but doesn't say how to change them which is weird. I was hoping when I saw your reply that you knew how to change them... that's why I didn't respond when I looked it up in the service manual.

So how does one go about checking the connector to make sure it is plugged in. I believe Nancy said to remove the mirror? How risky is that without breaking the mirror and get 7 years bad luck?

The volume is not the best, but the video will show you how to push and pop up the mirror. To install back, reverse the procedure.

The entire mirror assembly pops off. That is the first step in removing the bodywork to service your Spyder, and the most likely cause of a loose connector.

Using ond hand to support the mirror housing and resist your other hand, rap sharply at the outside edge of the housing, toward the rear of the Spyder, to pop loose the front spring clip. Next, rap upward from the bottom at the outer edge of the housing to pop loose the bottom spring clip. Slide the housing straight upward about 1/2" to release the keyhole clip. then remove the housing. The wires will be there, but the connector is probably inside the console. Carefully fish it out of the body and it can be disconnected or checked. If there isn't already one in place, I recommend tying a small zip-tie around the Spyder side of the harness, leaving the tail. That will prevent the wires from retracting inside the console while you are working, but can easily be tukjed back inside the console when you button things up.

Reassembly is the opposite of removal. Make sure the spring clips are straight and parallel, lightly lubricate the conical posts if you wish, connect the wires, tuck them into the console, slide on the keyhole clip, then rap downward to seat the bottom clip, and forward to seat the front clip.

The manual must have a mis-print about the bulbs being incandescent. I just looked mine in the eye and they are not incandescent.

JT What year is your Spyder? Mine is a 2012 and looking at your picture your side view turn signal looks completely than mine. I'm thinking maybe the newer Spyders are different from yours.

I tried to get the side view mirror assembly to release as per Nancy's directions but it just doesn't want to release. Just how hard do you have to hit the outside case to get it to release and lift off the clips. I just don't want to break anything that will cost me if I hit it too hard and break something. I think I may need some help on this one. LOL

You have to hit pretty hard, but only use the palm of your hand... like slapping a mishaved... well... not going further.:roflblack:

It does look scary at first, but once you get around to it, you'll get used to it since it does take a little practice!nojoke

Well I had to move up to a 15 lb. hammer to get the job done:yes:. Once I got the mirror assemble off the bike I found that the connector was down inside the black hole somewhere. Finally got it fished out and got both connectors together and now the left turn signal is working as it should. I want to thank everybody for their help on this as I could of never figured it out on my own.:clap:. You're the greatest.:firstplace:

Same as mine then. Have you tried to get the side view mirror off its clips. If you did, please enlighten me as how you did it.

Yep, mine popped right off... now that you see how they connect next time should be easier.

Glad to hear you found out what the problem was and was able to fix it.

Edit: I would have got back to you sooner but I was taking a nap...
