Should Bicyclist Pay??

do you think bicyclist should have to register their bicycles and or pay a tax? I mean they are putting up these bicycle lanes in most places now. there are even some states that have done that and now going to give bicyclist the right of way on top of that. this means they can ride in the middle of the lane (even though there is a bike lane). sounds kind of stupid to me.

i think if they are using the road, then they should pay some kind of tax just like motorcycles have too.

P.S. .... I really, really hate to run up on a group of cyclist on a two lane road and they all spread out going 20 mph and hogging the entire road. :banghead:

i don't agree with the tax idea, but i don't like the idea of having to ride a bike with the flow of the traffic. i liked when we could right against the traffic and we could see the cars coming at us instead of behind us

Hi DJFaninTN,

Re: do you think bicyclist should have to register their bicycles and or pay a tax?

I do not.

Re: this means they can ride in the middle of the lane (even though there is a bike lane

Here, this is allowed per the state driving laws; and has been for many, many years.

Portland, OR is somewhat known as Bicycle City USA. I doubt that you would like living here.

PS) I have owned my current bicycle for 42 yrs now. :yikes:

Here in my city and others bicycles are allowed the entire lane, I don't think it is statewide though. This is not a problem for me as long as there are at least 2 lanes in both directions, most bicyclist are pretty courteous about things on a 2 lane road. What I get upset about is that a cyclist is supposed to obey the same traffic laws that I am subject too, and alot of them do not. Those are the ones I have a problem with and give no respect. The tax I can go either way with. Maybe if they are going to ride in large groups they should get a parade permit.;)

Don't get me started......

However, if a person rides a bike in the street
he should have to get a lic. to use in in the traffic lanes
just like motor vehicles. In San Francisco the people
who ride bikes almost NEVER observe any traffic laws
they block traffic ride on the wrong side of the road
and more.

Well....

Gotta say it is costing a lot of money for all those bikes to be out there and they are taking up more and more so I feel they could share with the rest of us proportionaly...jmo My wife is a cyclist....

Let me get back to you on the original question, after I check with Trump.

I ride, but not on the street; I value my life too much.

I agree with the similar logic expressed by PMK regarding walkers, and to take it one step farther, those with handicap parking permits should also pay taxes for the extra money required for striping the parking lots and for the added signs, and let's not forget the added cost for extra wide doors and ramps to make buildings accessible to the handicap. Where does it end?

When I was a kid we rode our bikes all over town. I don't know how they'd enforce licensing for children. But, I do remember going down to the city hall to get a little license tag for my bike. I don't remember what it cost, if anything, and I don't think it was something we had to do every year. It may have been just to have the bike registered, in case it got stolen.

So, I don't think taxing bicycles is a very good idea. They already incur sales tax when purchased. I'm generally against adding any more layers of taxes or bureau-crap to the public. But I do agree that bicyclists should have to obey the laws of the road, as everyone else, and if there's a designated bike lane, they should be required to use it and not the roadway.

Same in New York City. And the city even provides the bikes!

Are you talking about Citibike? You have to pay per ride, or a monthly or yearly fee. The city makes money, and the city is less polluted. I don't see the problem. I've never had a problem with bicyclists in NYC.

Hi wyliec,

Re: Have you noticed in the past few years the bikes that have gone retro

I don't think that around here they are 'gone retro' as much as they are older bikes that have been resurrected, renewed & brought back to life.

What about Registration and Insurance!!

They should pay tax, be required to register their bike and obtain insurance. MTS.

Yes, Citibike. And you're right about the good points you raised. My point was that bicyclists here in NY don't pay attention to traffic laws either.

where I live ... officials have spend a fair amount of money marking lanes and putting up signs for bicycle lanes... why should they not pay ? motorcycles, cars, trucks have to pay for the right to use streets & highways... SHARE THE ROAD ---- SHARE THE TAX LOAD !

What about mopeds? Would you consider taxing and registering them? We have PLENTY running around in my neck of the woods, and they do get in the way at times!:yikes:

I can see the points of both sides of the issue. My biggest concern when talking about taxes and fees is that I do not trust bureaucrats to look at things from the prospective of recouping costs instead of finding another cash cow. The toll roads that charge a Spyder with a trailer the same amount for the biggest pick-up pulling a trailer that weighs more than any two Spyders with trailers irritates me to no end.
