Shock covers.

What you guys thoughts on covers for your shocks. Especially The rear one. I upgraded my shocks to Elkas. Obviously, I want to keep them clean and nice looking. I notice the back wheel throws small road debris directly on the shock. Would be nice if there was some kind fender like they have for the bobber kit that could be put on to block the debris, But what I did was purchased a vinyl covers that wrap around the shock and are held together with velcro. It’s washable and easily removable. Do any of you do something similar? Do you see this as a benefit? Or am I over thinking this?

Popular in snowmobiling until they heat up the shock, and retain moisture and cause rust....To each his own, but I wouldn't. Just a good rinsing once in a while...

Try This....

Perhaps a deflector plate would solve your problem. Something like the missing belt guard spyderpops has...:thumbup:

I had them on my off-road side-by-side. Always kicking up lots of rocks, dirt, mud...... They came in handy for that and I was sure to clean the shocks after every use. But, for the Spyder..... overkill..... Jim

I know you've a lot of coin in the Elkas but is the bike for riding or a concours d'elegance. Yes, my Spyder is showing some effects of the miles but I didn't buy it to be a hanger queen.

I have been making shock and fork tube covers for many years, how many would you like?

I'd leave the shocks out for the World to see... The covers will only hold moisture and grit; causing cosmetic damage to them.

Elkas often are run shaft down, so the shafts can be vulnerable. I thought Elka previously offered plastic protectors but no longer do.

Yes, the wetsuit material covers that velcro on will offer protection, but as already mentioned, may cause other issues.

Shock covers are a no-no in snowmobiling and mud bogging, but a yes-yes in desert racing. The difference, I believe, being moisture build up. So, I would guess that if you're in an area that gets a goodly amount of moisture you might think twice, or just be religious about cleaning. If you're in the West where water is more scarce, then it might less of a concern. However, either way, you can't just put them on and forget about it forever. They still have to be removed periodically and cleaned to remove the fine dust that'll get by and accumulate on the inside of the covers.
