Shifting issues

This past weekend a group of us from KC Spyder Ryders attended Lamonts workshop in Nixa MO and before leaving KC I did the ceremonial travel checks on wife’s and my bikes (tires / rear air shock / oil levels etc). The 170 mile trip was going great until going through Clinton MO (about 80 miles from Nixa) when I noticed the bike not shifting from 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] gear to 4[SUP]th[/SUP] gear at around 5k & 6k revs and taking about 4 pushes on the paddle to shift into 4[SUP]th. [/SUP] Getting into 5[SUP]th[/SUP] from 4[SUP]th[/SUP] was no issue and downshifting was no problem either. At first I was thinking it was just an odd gremlin thingy but as we were coming into Springfield it started having issues changing from 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] to 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] and then 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] to 4[SUP]th[/SUP].

I stopped in at Pitbull around 1:30pm to see if they could check it out but was told by the service manager that it needed oil .. I explained that the oil was at ¾ full and pulled the dipstick and took it into the shop and showed it to him .. was told once again it needed oil … (On a side note, the service manager didn’t seem too interested and I was left feeling like my issue was too trivial and putting him out. I thought this odd, normally Pitbull has great customer service and has been my go to place for the last 2.5 years). Anyway, I topped it off to the full line and said I would ride it for the afternoon to see if it clears it up (I had my doubts). As I was leaving I chatted with Len and he told me to come back if I am still having issues.

I rode it to our hotel in Nixa and from there to Lamonts, (still having changing issues) - I called Pitbull around 4pm and told them it is still not changing right and got it booked in for 9am Sat to get it checked out.

Now when I am saying not changing right, I mean like it is stuck in gear and not changing from 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] to 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] at 7k revs with normal city traffic riding .. So Sat morning I ride it to Pitbull and am in the parking lot at 8:30am waiting for them to open. Interestingly, the ride from Nixa to Springfield (about 15 miles) I had no shifting issues! The bike was taken out back and 30 minutes later comes back – diagnosis, nothing showing on the computer as being wrong (I assume this to mean BUDS) and the around the block ride they said the tech took didn’t show any changing issues. Hmmmm ... well now what, so I left and headed back Lamonts to attend the demos and of course wait out the storms. Once they passed we went to the hotel in Nixa … now as murphy’s law would have it, (Pitbull is closed for the day) the bike started with the changing issues again. We rode back to KC yesterday still having the issues and now I noticed that shifting from 1[SUP]st[/SUP] to 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] took about 5 pushes on the paddle before it would and change which caused the bike to hard shift (lurch) I recall the revs at around 7-8k and 38 miles an hour before it changed (causing me to ease off the throttle). This only happened once though.

Being Monday, I can’t get it booked into Reno’s Powersports in Martin City KS until tomorrow, but I am sitting here wondering if maybe having only 1 gremlin bell on the bike could be the issue? What do you guys think?

wondering here

possibly the oil filters ( 2 ) seeing that your cycle needs 2 filter could one be blocked , or have a problem like collapsing ? { there was another post I think it was here they had a filter that collapsed after it was installed } might be something to check out ... just me thinking aloud with you

thanks for the idea, thus far I have thought (1) Dirty connection at paddle, (2) paddle needs tightening to get better connection, (3) shift solenoid gone bad, (4) bad position sensor or (4) Leaking clutch piston

Similar thing happened to me last year. The paddle shifter bit the dust. Dealer replaced it and it has been working great ever since. I rode the bike with the bad shifter for about 800 miles. I had to go back to the dealer a few times before they determined it was the shifter although I had the code (not sure what the number is) for a bad sifter since the first time it happened.

Thanks for responding, in fact the paddle shifter on mine is not feeling the same as it has felt. By this I mean that is it not as spongy or springy when changing gear and was wondering if maybe the paddle could have decided to retire itself.

Friend with 2016 F3-T had exactly same problem with manual shift purchased new from PitBull and was told it was an oil issue, after a few brands oil changes problem didn't go away. Took it to Sierra Cycles, Sierra Vista, AZ They dismantled transmission and found a loose clutch nut... end of problem. SE & manual trannys are same except method of shifting. Hope this leads to end of problem for you. Good Luck

Thanks for the idea, I will definitely mention this to the tech tomorrow when I drop the bike off, but I do hope it isn't something like a loose nut in the clutch ... my hope is a new paddle or some tightening is needed.

There you go....

Several good point to mention but going with the paddle shifter system....there have been more of them than other issues mentioned...

SHIFTER ISSUES

Rob, if you are using Land Air .... I'm not surprised they didn't get it right the first time :banghead: ..... Mike

Follow up FYI

Ok, I dropped off the bike at Reno Powersports in Martin City MO yesterday afternoon and spoke to Brad at the service desk as well as Dennis (Master Tech). Once I explained what the bike was doing and how the paddle was feeling Dennis immediately explained that the paddle has a ball bearing type ball and a spring inside and that he had a recent customer that had a similar issue where the spring had broken and needed to be replaced. He then took the bike for a ride and upon returning confirmed that the paddle was not springing back like it should have been causing bike to not change gears smoothly. He is 99% sure that is the issue I am having and has it in the shop now.

While he has it, I am getting the 18k service done and should have the bike back in a couple of days ready for our trip to Spyderfever in Council Bluffs IA next week.

Also, while I was at the dealers, I got a great deal on an extended warranty with Zurich (Thanks Steve O & Mike) and am now extended until Sep 2020 with $0 deductible. Doesn't get better than this!

Be mindful of the those cagers and Ryde safe out there all.
