This past weekend a group of us from KC Spyder Ryders attended Lamonts workshop in Nixa MO and before leaving KC I did the ceremonial travel checks on wife’s and my bikes (tires / rear air shock / oil levels etc). The 170 mile trip was going great until going through Clinton MO (about 80 miles from Nixa) when I noticed the bike not shifting from 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] gear to 4[SUP]th[/SUP] gear at around 5k & 6k revs and taking about 4 pushes on the paddle to shift into 4[SUP]th. [/SUP] Getting into 5[SUP]th[/SUP] from 4[SUP]th[/SUP] was no issue and downshifting was no problem either. At first I was thinking it was just an odd gremlin thingy but as we were coming into Springfield it started having issues changing from 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] to 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] and then 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] to 4[SUP]th[/SUP].
I stopped in at Pitbull around 1:30pm to see if they could check it out but was told by the service manager that it needed oil .. I explained that the oil was at ¾ full and pulled the dipstick and took it into the shop and showed it to him .. was told once again it needed oil … (On a side note, the service manager didn’t seem too interested and I was left feeling like my issue was too trivial and putting him out. I thought this odd, normally Pitbull has great customer service and has been my go to place for the last 2.5 years). Anyway, I topped it off to the full line and said I would ride it for the afternoon to see if it clears it up (I had my doubts). As I was leaving I chatted with Len and he told me to come back if I am still having issues.
I rode it to our hotel in Nixa and from there to Lamonts, (still having changing issues) - I called Pitbull around 4pm and told them it is still not changing right and got it booked in for 9am Sat to get it checked out.
Now when I am saying not changing right, I mean like it is stuck in gear and not changing from 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] to 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] at 7k revs with normal city traffic riding .. So Sat morning I ride it to Pitbull and am in the parking lot at 8:30am waiting for them to open. Interestingly, the ride from Nixa to Springfield (about 15 miles) I had no shifting issues! The bike was taken out back and 30 minutes later comes back – diagnosis, nothing showing on the computer as being wrong (I assume this to mean BUDS) and the around the block ride they said the tech took didn’t show any changing issues. Hmmmm ... well now what, so I left and headed back Lamonts to attend the demos and of course wait out the storms. Once they passed we went to the hotel in Nixa … now as murphy’s law would have it, (Pitbull is closed for the day) the bike started with the changing issues again. We rode back to KC yesterday still having the issues and now I noticed that shifting from 1[SUP]st[/SUP] to 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] took about 5 pushes on the paddle before it would and change which caused the bike to hard shift (lurch) I recall the revs at around 7-8k and 38 miles an hour before it changed (causing me to ease off the throttle). This only happened once though.
Being Monday, I can’t get it booked into Reno’s Powersports in Martin City KS until tomorrow, but I am sitting here wondering if maybe having only 1 gremlin bell on the bike could be the issue? What do you guys think?
