SE5 Stuck in gear with engine off

If people are reading this board and are deciding on which Spyder to buy, I think it's safe to say that the SM5 is a better way to go...at least for now...I'm not making things up about the SE5...my bias is based on all that I read, and I think we can both agree that there are a disproportionate amount of problems with the SE5 vs. the SM5. You bought your bike and you should love it! I ride with friends who have Harleys and they don't even consider my Spyder to be a bike! So be it. If someone has disabilities or is in a very high traffic area, then the SE5 makes sense...however, caveat emptor...you have to be more prepared to deal with problems.

Ok i have to agree with dudley here. Its really getting old that every post that has anything to do with a SE5 you step in and bash them for one reason or another. You only "Hear" about problems here. Untill you have personally owned a SE5 and had problems with it why not just keep your comments to yourself. I have 6700 miles on my SE5 and have only had it in the shop for maintance/mods. And your most famous comment i see in EVERY post bashing the SE5 is "SM5 is more fun anyways" THat is your opinion and everyone has the right to there own opinion. ME i think SM and SE have the same fun factor. So my 2 cents is untill you OWN a SE5 you shouldn't bash them. Afterall if i went by what i read here i wouldn't own a spyder at all as all i seem to read is the bad on SE and SM.

I rode an SE5 at a demo day last summer and found it to be interesting. I didn't like not having the control to override the downshifting. It didn't have nearly the spunk that my SM5 has, but then again I've got some extras that don't make it a fair comparison (hindle, o2 mod, race airflow, fuel pressure mod).

I think they really should have made a system that still allowed manual shifting with a manual foot shifter and clutch if you so desired.

My dealer said he wasn't looking forward to selling the SE5's because they expected plenty of problems with them as they had with previous 'automatic' versions of BRP products.

Not that I was very interested in one, but at the time I ordered my Spyder there were three reasons I wouldn't have gone with the SE5:

1. Long wait to get them (heck, I had to wait a year to get my SM5). The SE5 would have been another 8 months.
2. $1,600 more.
3. Potential problems according to dealer.

#1 is no longer an issue.

I fully understand those that want the SE5 and think they can be great for many for various reasons (disabled, older riders, women riders, new riders or those that just flat out don't want to mess with a clutch).

Plenty of reasons for BRP to produce this model - just hope they can get these bugs worked out for you guys!

It's a bit frustrating to have to pay more money for my extended warranty because the SE5s are costing the company a lot of money. So, I don't need to own a SE5...they're costing all of us more money.

That's a fact...not opinion.

As far as not commenting on the woes of owning a SE5, I'll stop posting...we're going to have to get the 'beating a dead horse' graphic up here soon...

You don't need to tell me to keep my comments to myself...this is a sounding board for all opinions...both yours and mine...

I fail to see how the SE5 problems are affecting you or I. I paid in full for my 5 years of warranty - a set price that cannot be increased. How long have you had your Spyder? Did you buy the extended warranty at that time?

I think they should probably charge more for the warranty on the SE5 - considering it's a more expensive bike.

Ah, there we go...

I'm not starting with any particular people...it's others who are starting with me. If I were a perspective buyer, I'd want to hear from many, not just a few...enough said...time for lunch!

I'm just hoping for some warm weather!

BRP has published numbers for the warranties...they went up in price dramatically...if you bought when you got your bike, you did save money...if you bought after, the base price went up 200.00 and there is not a 75.00 surcharge for each additional year of coverage you want in the plan. Originally, you were able to buy the warranty after the bike purchase for the same price...regardless now, the price has gone up. The prices have gone up due to SE5 problems...I've had more than one dealership explain this to me. My argument was the same as yours...the SM5 is cheaper...it doesn't matter, all the warranties have gone up a lot.

What was a $545.00 base price for the 5 year BEST is now a $750.00 base price...add the surcharges, and you're over $1000.00.

They should charge more for the SE5 because it has more problems...SM5 owners shouldn't have to cover the expense for others...then again, we are in America and that seems to be a new theme...

Drats!

BC is basically talking dealer's cost here... at least on the base... not the consumer's price. I have validated that the extended warranty cost did just recently increase dramatically... and the numbers mentioned are absent of any dealer margin... which they need to stay in business.

Well, if you only paid $545.00 for the BEST warranty, then you got a DEAL. Most people paid $700-$900 for the BEST basic. I was told I could buy it anytime, but that the prices *could* go up.

As far as the comment about America and covering the expenses of others - are you new to our country? The reason I ask is that the middle and upper classes have always 'carried' the lower classes - this is nothing new. The fact of the matter is that most Americans get far more OUT of our government than they put IN. Roads, police, fire, trains, electric grid, phone grid, schools, hospitals, military, etc. are things many take for granted - but are things we all benefit from. In this respect, we have always had socialized programs that we have all benefited from.

Things are gonna get better, of course they can't really get much worse.

I was told when I bought my bike that the dealerships could offer the extended warranties at the same price (as when you buy the bike) as long as the bike was under the initial 2 year period...of course, they didn't back that when I was there a few weeks ago to get the 5 year BEST warranty. They showed me the prices and their markup...they were fair with what they had to work with...I don't mind if they need to make money...we all do...it's a shame that the base went up so much though...and that surcharge is really annoying!!! And again, the reason why the prices are going up so much...

I agree with you 100%...I'm leaning more libertarian these days...

Anyway, the base price was originally $545 and some dealers (not mine) offered that as a perk to get the extended warranty when the bike was purchased. The base has gone up considerably and my dealership thinks it will continue to go up more. It's hard to get the 5 year BEST for under $1000, and expect this number to continue to go up...if you haven't gotten the BEST and want to get it, now might be the time...they just raised the price and added the $75.00 per year of coverage surcharge (this is really crappy!)...they have to make the money back from the problems the bikes are having...

I understand your points, but I look at the BEST warranty as something that I hope I never have to actually use (kind of like my snow blower). I want to have it there in case I ever need it. At the end of 5 years should I complain about spending that $900 and never using it? Not really - I think of it like car insurance.

Totally agree...the problem is if one electrical problem pops up in 3 years, that one problem alone will likely cost more than $1000.00...this is the same issue I faced when I bought my Lexus hybrid...do you go with the expensive warranty or not? Well, being the navi alone is $3000 to fix, I figured it's best to just fork over the money and not worry about a thing for 7 years.

Unfortunately, with the Spyder, there are many problems now. The strength of a company is how it treats its customers...if BRP doesn't start dealing with the SE5 problems soon in a responsible fashion, it will start adversely affecting sales...being the Spyder is still new and hot, BRP gets a free pass...for a while...sooner or later, the problems will catch up...let's hope they get things right now. There should never be bikes in shops for weeks and weeks on end...this is totally unacceptable!

I agree and I'm not one to let them off the hook for long. Instead of gearing up to sell TWICE what they first expected (and lowering the value to us first owners), they should have stuck to their guns and only made what they planned on.

When we originally couldn't get simple parts like oil filters, my first thought was that there WERE plenty of oil filters - but BRP opted to put them into new bikes instead of having the dealers be able to stock them.

As far as I'm concerned - every Spyder on the dealers showroom floor should be considered an emergency spare parts machine.

If I were BRP I would not have sold a single Spyder until all of the dealers were stocked with everything they need for service. They could have easily done this if they had kept to their original plans of making only 1,500 PE units, or even after they increased it to 2,500 PE's - which ended up more like 2682 or something. They made over 5,000 Spyders that first year.

End of Rant - Love my Spyder.
