There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. SE5 or SM5

Ready to purchase my Spyder but I don't know if I should go with the SE5 or SM5. I am concered that the SE5 may not be bullet proof. I would appreciate any comments regarding the reliability of both.

I bought a SM because there was no SE at the time. If I had it to do over again I would buy the SE. I have a KFX700 and I had a Boss Hoss for 5 years and I love the auto's. I think they have figured out the shifting issues by changing out the gear position sensor.

By the way welcome:spyder::doorag:

I personally like a clutch. My wife had no experience with a hand clutch, just autos and the automatic clutch on her Trail 90, but she very learned quickly, and has had no problems. It is a matter of personal preferences...and possibly finances. I think they will sort out the problems with the SE5.

Took my SE in today for 2nd service and some occassional hesitation upshifting and sometimes getting stuck in reverse. The Gear Box Position Sensor was out of range and the Throttle Position Sensor was closed. They reset both and the difference shifting on the ride home was amazing. It is shifting much smoother than before and I didn't think it was that bad before. I am really pleased with my SE5 and this correction made for a sweet ride home. Pops in and out of reverse with no sticking now whatsoever. I would buy another SE in a minute. (and I really enjoyed the SM also)

i like the se5 and funny thats the only thing on my spyder that did not give me any problem almost. well there was one time when i was accelerating onto freeway and 5th gear didnt engage and i almost hit a big rig on the side because i had expected my spyder to zip by it. i had to lower the gear to 4th than back to 5th and sometimes when i shift there will be just slight hesitation where rpm will jump high than spyder will accelerate but 95% of the times gear change is instant.

I wanted to get the 'feel' of a motorcycle so the SM5 was for me. I think hittin' the clutch and changing gears is what makes the bike fun. I also believe that it keeps you more 'in touch' with the road...just as a manual car is more of a driving experience as opposed to an automatic vehicle, so, too, IMHO, is the SM5 vs. the SE5.

Originally ordered a SM-5>>>>

>>>>>but due to BRP delivery screw-up got the SE-5. I have ridden both, the SE-5, now that the shift sensor is replaced, is just fine for control. I have only disagreed with its choice of gears twice as it downshifted a little earlier than I would have. One advantage, in a panic stop it will get you back to first a bit easier than a manual though the computer does it on its own time.

For me the lack of the left hand clutch makes things much easier after dialysis treatment. The acess is on my left bicept and too much use could cause bleeding. This is only about the third auto I have ever ridden and the first I have owned but I will not go back.

Mostly flat land here but the one intersection over on 9th Ave convences me the auto would be very handy if I was back in San Francisco! Of course the Tryke is no problem but trafic can catch you with a wrong foot down on a hill with a two wheeler. There is a bit of a thin line between promt engagement on a steep hill and too much giving a smoking rear tire but that can happen with a manual as well.

Originally I had hoped for a version like the new Honda "Automatic Sport Bike" but am quite happy with what I have.

After driving both, I went with the SE5 and I'm glad I did. Can't speak to the reliability yet, only have 200 miles on it. You still have control over shifting, just less to think about.

I have a SE5 and have about 5400 miles on it with no major problems. Had a shift indicator failure code pop once but after shutting it down and restarting it was cleared and hasn't come up again. Dealer is going to perform the service bullitin once they get the rest of the parts in.

I was orginally going to purchase a SM5 but having taken a ride on a SE5 on the weekend, I am honestly leaning toward the automatic shift

I am very happy with my SM. There was no SE when I bought mine.

When we went to Canada for the Spyder Homecoming last year I was surprised that all of the test riders for BRP were on SE's. I talked to 3 of them and asked why. I thought maybe they were trying to promote that version.

The answer I got surprised me. They each said they were able to ride either model but they all preferred the SE. They all said that the SE was a more sporty version than the SM. And these guys rode very aggressively.

I have never ridden an SE. But I have wondered if I would prefer the SE over my SM.

Bottom line, I don't think you can go wrong either way.

I wonder why they considered the SE5 more sporty than the SM5. The only difference is the electronic shifter, right?

Great comments

Thanks for the rapid response. This is a great site. Appreciate the your comments. Sooner or later it will stop snowing and raining and I'll get my Spyder. SE5 or SM5? - I'm stil thinking about it.

Scotty is correct, test ride both. I did 2 demo rides with the west coast BRP team. One SE one SM. Either way you will have a blast.
