Turkey basters are OK, but an oil suction gun from the auto parts store is better.Got it done. Guess a turkey baster would come in handy to get the rest out. Just didn't like leaving that much old oil left in it.

To avoid the mess on the fins: with the plug out of the drained reservoir, place a pan under the res. Slack the HCM filter cover screws a few turns while holding the cover in. Now, quickly pull back on the filter cover enough to momentarily unseat the O ring and then press the cover back again to seal the oil in. If you are fast here very little, if any, oil leaks out. You could have a rag in place to catch any drops, but there wont be much. What this action does is to admit atmospheric air into the module," breaking the suction." You will then hear the residual oil running into the reservoir and see it pour into the drain pan. Wait till it finishes running and then you can remove the filter with no mess.Did you remove both drain plugs? The one under the oil tank and the one for the engine. This second one is somewhat hidden. Even then there will be some oil mess when you remove the tranny oil filter. I needed to place a shop towel under the tranny filter housing to catch all the oil that is trapped there. Don't know of any other options. If you don't soak it up with a towel it runs onto the fins below the filter housing and is a mess to clean up. Hopefully someone else has more experience and will tell us how to avoid that in the future.
This has always intrigued me about the SE5. There is a drain plug located next to the transmission filter which I assume is designed to drain the oil in the transmission circuit. But I don't know anyone who uses it. I don't own an SE so I have no more information that what is supplied in the BRP parts listing for the Spyder.
My thought would be to thread a short extension into this drain plug hole to clear the case. Then you could pull the cap at the end of the extension and avoid the transmission drain mess.
At one time I was looking into getting the O-Ring for this drain plug to include in the Filter Kits I sell. But no one ever asked for them so I never pursued it further.

I don't see how pulling the plug would drain any more oil out if you have the filter out anyway. It appears that the plug is above the filter housing and would think it would/should drain from the lower point where the SE filter is? And if you did drain it from the plug I would think it would go all over the fins, that looks like it would be a complete mess? Is it only me that see's this? Curious to see if anyone has removed this plug yet.
