SE5 Downshifting to 1st is rough

Wanted to post this as to see if any other SE5 owners are experiencing a roughness when the SE5 downshifts on its own from 2nd to 1st. Say on the highway slowing to a stop the tranny is downshifting smooth as I slow, then as it nears lower RPM from 2nd to 1st it seems to be rough. Downshifting into first it drops to say 1500-1600 RPM but still in first it seems to rev RPMs on its own to say 2100 RPM then backs down. It almost appears to be hiccuping from 1500 to the 2100 and then drops to the idle 1350-1400 RPM.

Just seeing if anyone else has experienced this? Other then that it has been one smooth riding ride.

Cheers! :doorag:

Morrocco, the SE5 has a little gadget called a Blipper. During a downshift, it momentarily opens the throttle to increase the engine RPM. This assists the synchronization of engine RPM and rear wheel speed and also prevents the RPM from dropping below centrifugal clutch engagement speed. I used to do this manually on some bikes to ease first gear engagement. Hope this helps.

Neez,

Thanks. I was thinking that was the case but it sometimes appears to be too rough, hence my question to the collective of smart folk here.

Love my Spyder and want it running smooth as to keep on enjoying it for years to come.

Thanks!

On mine there's no blip on the downshift to 1st. I think that's because I'm usually totally off the gas when that shift occurs. I have felt a little jerk/clunk at times but usually I don't even notice that shift. I have played with doing that 2-1 shift manually but it's hardly worth the trouble. All the other downshifts do get a definite blip.

I sure hope that there's a sturdy mechanism in there because it's so much fun in the tight twisties! ;)

it's pretty much the norm to do that.

If you don't like it, shift into first before it reaches it's automatic downshift point.

Are you having any other problems, such as surging between 3,000 and 4,000 rpms? If not then I would not be too concerned about it. I can also hear an audible clunk when my shifts back into first gear on its own.

Yep, the 3-2 downshift can be clunky, the 2-1 clunker still. More so ti seems if you are coasting down. If you are braking hard the shifts seem smoother. It seems normal to me.

did you have the update to the update done? much improvement in the overall drivetrain operation. also suggest the use of the new full synthetic xp-s oil by brp. finally, if you manually downshift into first from higher speed the blipper will engage even when 2 to 1 shift resulting in smoother transition.

I agree about the second update. My auto downshifts are much smoother, particularly to first. There seems to be much less of a throttle blip as well. Very happy I had the update done.
