Russell or Corbin Saddle? It's decision time. Owners of either; what say you?

I've decided to go forward on a new seat for my Spyder. Now... which one do I want? I have heard great things about the Corbin. And, I have also read nice things about the Russell Day-Long.

Pros, Cons of either? Are they both equally comfortable, etc,,,?

Thanks!

Hey, Greg. I have a Corbin. Having said that, the Day-Long is well known in the motorcycle touring community as the top of the line... hard to beat it due to its construction.

You will have to send your stock seat, though, for the Day-Long build. Might want to pick up a used seat for that so you can keep your stock for a possible sale in the future.

Hey Greg so your taking the plunge now huh? Well you already know my feelings on the Corbin I have it and love it. Put 300 miles on it yesterday and could have gone further i think.

If you want to try out the corbin though just let me know and we can meet up

CORBIN...

:2thumbs::2thumbs::2thumbs::coffee:
for me the cons are i think the corbin looks like it came with the spyder the day long kind of looks like factory seat has been modified ....
and isnt it a little about how it looks ...
just my opinion

I have the day long and like it. Looks good also. The dealer shipped a seat to Russell and I was still able to ride until the new seat came back. Then I gave the dealer mine.

Thanks to everyone who has posted to this thread!

I wonder if I can get the Corbin w/o the arachnid logo? :yikes:

We had a Corbin seat on my husband's old bike and hated it - we were sore after riding for only a short time. So I put a Russell seat on my Spyder and love it. The Russell is made specifically for you. In my case, they moved me forward a bit. I also got the rider backrest. I think it looks fine.

My 2 cents.
I have the corbin, and I find it very hard even after the so-called 2,000 mile breakin. However, durnig bike week in Daytona, I compared mine to several others and found that the others were so much softer than mine, with some having more and some less miles on the seat.
I went to Corbin in Ormand Beach, and Mr Sergio agreed that my seat was an exception and was willing to pull my seat and ship it to Calif, and would be gone for 4-6 weeks. :yikes: I asked if he had a seat in stock, NO he replied. Well it seems that I have to get a stock seat in order for me to ride until Corbin fixes my seat. But 4-6 weeks...OMG :yikes:.. They didn't take that long to collect my money.
However, in lieu of all of the above, The Corbin is a good looking an well made seat, ( Mine is IRON and I have added an Air Hawk for a bit of comfort). Those who had the softer seat said the SEATS were great. I guess I got a lemon.
I have no actual knowledge of other seats including the Russell Day Long.. However, if Corbin does not respond, I shall try the Russell as I have read here on the board of those who have the Russell that it is a great seat.

The comfort, style, and shape of a seat to suit you, really depends on you, and you alone. We all have different anatomies, different bikes have different types of seats, and what works for one, may not work for another...even with the same brand of seat. I have owned a few Corbins, and they were all miserable bricks...to me! Others have praised them to the heavens. I think the stock Spyder seat is one of the most comfortable I have ever experienced, others were in pain from the moment they sat down. I have had bikes with very nice aftermarket seats, but have tried a Sargent and a Day-Long on my BMW, and they were both too wide and put my legs to sleep. Of course the Spyder poses fewer problems there, since you never put your feet down.

My advice is to try to find someone nearby who has one or the other, and ask to sit on it and try it. Maybe somebody on this forum can arrange to meet you. Only time in the saddle will answer your question accurately. Even then, someone else's Day-Long may not be quite right, since they are custom built to suit. If you must buy one without trying it, I'd probably choose the Russell. It is built to suit you, from pictures and data you submit, instead of being more of a standard seat. Better chance to get it right the first time. Not throwing rocks, some folks are very satisfied with the Corbin.

Again, thanks everyone! And, Scotty; great post!

It's not like I have $550+ burning a hole in my pocket. I would rather not spend $$$ on a new seat. The stock seat has done me okay. I passed the 7,500 mile mark today. But, since I know the Wife and I will be taking some longer trips; overnight, and such; I'm looking out for her ultimate comfort as well.

I believe Tim (zzneonzz) mentioned to me that the standard Corbin is about $550. I have no idea how much the Russell Day-Long costs. But, I do know; I'm not spending over $600. And, at first, I was thinking about just getting the BRP custom cover since they look so nice. But, I doubt they add any additional comfort. Or; do they?

I think my next step is to hook up with Tim sometime soon - next week, or so; and check out the Corbin on his Spyder. :)

Long time motorcycle rider here. Corbin looks great in the style department, but the seats are often HARD. And, if you want a mod on the seat because you're not satisfied with it, they whack you a significant extra charge even though the problem is no fault of yours. I never heard ANYBODY say that a Russell was not THE MOST COMFORTABLE SEAT THEY EVER RODE. I've heard plenty of people belly-ache about Corbin, though there are certainly many folks who like their saddles. If YOUR butt is in the saddle, it's not about looks, it's about comfort. If you take long rides, get the Russell. If you want style, consider a Corbin. (YMMV--I'm definitely a function over form guy, especially where riding comfort comes in.)

Russell guarantees you'll like it or they'll buy it back. We went with Russell from prior experience. Very happy with the result.

Corbin Seat

I really like the Corbin seat for sitting in the seat rather than sitting on the seat---I kept sliding off the original seat on turns. But---the Corbin for the Spyder, I'm sure, is better for shorter people. At 6 feet, I feel too close to the handlebars, and my legs are uncomfortable on the pegs and brake. I'd love to push back on the seat about 3 inches, but the rise will not let you do that. Unlike the original, the Corbin comes in two sections--rider and passenger. Today, I reset the bolts on the front seat, and gained about an inch---but not enough. I may have to have some foam and fiberglass trimmed down, then I can gain more space to the back. There are a number of seat out there---for what they cost, it's better to check them carefully---I'll will do so in the future.

I love my Russell, still haven't taken a real long trip yet due to weather but it is a great seat so far. bjt loves his too and they are each different. Russell makes the seat for you and will adjust it up to 2 times for free and as mentioned, they have a buy back guarantee. We got ours for under $600 each but we got in on their annual group buy which happens in the fall. They have prices on their website and they vary depending on material used and any extras you get. I would check out their site and price one out the way you want it and then remember, this seat is for sitting on for a lot of miles. It is truly an investment. Make sure it is right for you.

Hi Deb. I might give Russell a call today. I really like the idea of the 'buy back' guarantee. I'm willing to go $600. But, on the other hand, I may wait for this purchase for awhile. Maybe, make a few longer trips with the stock seat, and see how we fare. 'Might even go ahead with the BRP seat cover for $180 in the meantime.
