There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. No....

Well not on the 2012's. The whole fire thing was with the thirteens. One would have to know more about that spyder and it's history to tell what caused the fire...:dontknow:

Date of the article is 2014 and about the time all the stuff was going with the NHTSA concerning mostly the fires on 2013 :spyder2:'s. The result was air scoops put on 2013 RT's to solve the possibility of fires.

There were less than 20 documented fires on :ani29:'s over the years. The rhetoric on SL was hot and heavy concerning the subject. Many with an agenda had their say as well as the satisfied members that had the air scoops installed and still ride their trusty machines today.

Most now consider the subject a moot issue. If you had a fire, you are going to have a different opinion. There will continue to be fires, because it happens when you mix gasoline and heat. Are the :spyder2: 's ticking time bombs? I don't think so. Any vehicle can have a fire. Currently, there are a couple car fires that have been reported caused by the batteries in the new Samsung phones. Fires happen.

I have owned five assorted :spyder2:'s since day one. Getting on board and going up in flames has never been one of my worries.

Would much rather take my chances on a Spyder that might catch fire than risking death driving in a car with a Takata airbag. For that matter I think Tesla has a worse record if you look at the number of fires verses the number of vehicles produced.

Hi al0vely,

Re: This is scary.

I refuse to live in fear.

I have had a car go up in flames on me. It is very interesting to watch flames come boiling out under a dashboard.

I have survived two airplane crashes; this was the worst one:

Maybe old news, maybe not.

"And I had just filled up. I made it to that on ramp and bailed off. Knees and elbow are scrapped up"

only thing I can add " must have been one hot lady in the saddle " { or guy , for the ladies on the forums :D } there is a you tube video , of a :ani29: r.t. on fire , seems the cycle shop had a " test drive and ride " session going on and the spyder pulled up too a tent area and went up in flames ! https://youtu.be/75RPJOp36ts she was a Purdy white one posted in the 2013 time line

Yes this is old news, however if the fed investigation did include the 2014s I'm curious to know the findings

I believe that the NHTSA investigation did not include the 2014 models - only 2013 and earlier. I think this particular journalist had that wrong. However, although 2013 models did have the highest incidents if fires cited, there were a number of fires listed for RT's earlier than 2013. That's why I've always been surprised that the government let BRP off the hook by enacting a recall on only the 2013 model year. To their credit, BRP has at least installed the new air vents for owners of earlier models who have pressed the issue about their bike running hot. As for 2014 and later models, there were a number of design changes built in for the purpose of heat remediation, which reportedly work well.

If you are curious to read the investigation reports, they are available on the NHTSA web site.

D***MN!! Did you have to get another guardian angel after that one quit?

2011 spyder

The advertisement stated the one the law enforcement officers were using was a 2011! The write up may be wrong, but it state the one the law officers had was a 2011 and the others were 2013's!
All 49 spyders fires are not 2013, the 49 fires expanded from 2008 -2013. I haven't seen a report on how many 2013 alone have caught fire! Mine is a 2013 RTL, it seems to run cool since the recall was done by the dealer putting on the new vents under the mirrors and new fuel kit! Hope it don't burn, I got off of a perfectly good Harley to buy this thing. Hope I am quoting accurate information as was stated on this forum! Thanks for all your comments!
