RT accident

retread

New member
A member couple here were involved in an accident a few days ago, I understand they are both in fair shape, but their 2011 blue RT has $26,000 in damage. Trickie Dick and I were at the dealership when they were just beginning to take a test ride, and I think our input helped them make the decision to buy.
The accident was caused by a 19 year old turned into them at a intersection. I'll try to get more information, and post it when I get it.
The couple's user name is DSP.

I know this may start a storm, but ban texting AND any use of cell phones while driving. Many people just can't walk and chew gum at the same time. (multi tasking for those in Rio Linda). I fear that this was probably the case. I do hope that they will be okay.

I hope they they both have a fast recovery. In California texting and/or cell phone without a handsfree device is against the law, but I did not see anything that said the 19 year old was texting or using a cell phone.

You're absolutely right and that is why I used the adjective "probably". Probably a bad call on my part, but I still stand by my original statement. (including talking hands free on a cell phone). The problem isn't so much having the cell phone in the hand as it is the concentration on the driving viz a viz talking or texting.

I figure we can make it even easier than that. We ban power steering, then everybody will have to use two hands...LOL. :D

Sorry to hear about this accident. My prayers for a full recovery to those involved. There is one part of all this that bothers me...one Spyder running into the other one that was in front. In Maggie Valley I witnessed a lot of Spyder riders following way too close. No way they could have stopped in time if something like this happened. We saw several close calls. Be sure to leave a safe distance ahead. The Spyder brakes are not stellar...and they lag even more when wet.

Don't get me wrong, as I agree too many drivers do not pay attention to their driving. From cell phones, eating, talking to the passenger, or even reading (directions) on the GPS. It will be interesting to find out what caused it.

It's sad to hear this happened and I hope they recover quickly. I hope this accident doesn't ruin their experience with the spyder and they ride again.

Scotty, no question about it, you're absolutely right. I use the 2-second rule for following. If someone is too close to my rear-end, I'll increase that margin so I (hopefully) don't catch the person behind me by surprise.

I don't see a second RT mentioned in this incident, but may have not read all the details carefully.

Praying for a full and speedy recovery for both.

I guess maybe I got my accidents confused. There was another recently yesterday involving two Spyders and a third vehicle, and it stuck in my mind. Blame in on the drugs after the surgery, blame it on my old head injury, or blame it on ageing brain cells. Still a good idea to follow at further intervals. I have seen too many Spyders in groups jammed up on each other's fannies. BTW, I was reading in an old thread here that the 2-second rule was no longer considered adequate. After some reflection on this, I have opened up my interval even further. My reflexes are aging as fast as my feeble brain cells. ;)

Best wishes to them for a quick recovery. Been hearing of lots of incidents lately. We absolutely have to be our own best defense out there. Search, Evaluate, Execute!! Plan an escape route at intersections in case someone is about to rear end you. Believe that drivers will do the most stupid thing possible. Because, often times, they will!

Hate to hear of anyone having a crash on two or three wheels. Increasing following distance to cars AND other motorcycles and Spyders is a good idea!!! One can never have too much room to escape a developing situation!

Based upon your knowledge of Spyders and most other things mechanical, accompanied by a desire to be of assistance, I'm certain that your brain cells are not even close to being feeble.

I saw so many of those left turns in my 30 year career. Never a good outcome. Hope they recover soon and get there ride replaced with a shiny new one.
