• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Route 66 trip in May 2010

On Mon, May 17, add Afton, OK to your list. There is an old DX gas station now restored as a museum with lots of old Packards and other neat stuff. Also, nearby are a few original sections of 9-foot-wide Rt 66 that you can ride thru the fields...

Your Day 6 and 7 needs to add the mileage from Williams up to Grand Canyon NP. Also, you might spend more time there and stop in Kingman for the night. The ride from Seligman to Kingman is beautiful and fast (Hackberry General Store is wworth a stop), but from Kingman to Needles will take you longer than you expect -- its a very curvy road and you often are reduced to 25 mph. Also, on that stretch you'll want to stop in Oatman and say hello to the resident burros. I did that stretch at the end of a day riding from Grants Pass, NM to Needles and it was a much longer stretch than I thought it would be -- took me about 2 hours I think and I should have just stopped in Kingman. In any case, no gas between Kingman and Needles.

I may try to join in on May 23rd -- Needles is as far as I made it before heading home out 40, up 395 on the eastern side of the Sierra to Tahoe, then over to Sac town. Sure like to do the rest of Rt 66 in CA! Yes, it can get hot, but an early start helps -- May should be fine weather. When I left Needles in late July, it was over 100 at 5 AM....

Thanks....good info. And thanks too for catching the Grand Canyon error. BIG help. Hope you can join us for the CA section

I have been talking to Retread(John Stohr) here in Indiana and he is interested in going with us. And, as you said, Irish, there may be more as we get closer.
I guess what I'm saying is I vote for the radios for communications. That way we can all be "on the same wave link". I am NOT saying don't get the scala Q2 Gene. According to Irish, you can connect the radio to the Q2 headset.

The possibility of picking up more ryders is a good point. I know for certain that several have expressed interest in joining us for individual state legs. We would definitely need the radios and, even then, I'm not sure that all would be compatible but we'll make do with whatever lash up we have. The primary reasons I will have the Q2:
1) Can hear my GPS commands (Bluetooth)
2) Can answer my cell phone (Bluetooth)
3) Can hear the radio (Hardwire) through mp3 port. Might look for a "splitter" so I can wire BOTH the radio and my iPod to the helmet

So I think the Q2 will still be needed

Coming out of Yellowstone, I think we should go out the east portal to Cody and then down. If you want to go down through Rocky Mountain National Park, that would be great. Steamboat Springs, Co. is a great town. Ski Town but very old west. Then the road over Rabbit Ears pass is beautiful. In fact, that whole area is worth the drive. There are several options in northern Colorado we can consider when we get in that area. Be aware that when we get into Colorado and Wyoming, we will be going over passes in excess of 10,000 ft. It will be chilly that time of year. There is a pass from Kremmling to Estes Park in Rocky Mtn. Nat'l Park that will probably not be open then. It usually doesn't open until around the 4th of July. We can play it by ear. I think we should look at options as we go. It's going to be a great trip.

I agree that the best bet is to play it by ear based upon weather and time constraints.

I'm open for suggestions on what to take, wear etc

I will be riding with a leather jacket and chaps over jeans and a t-shirt. Was thinking of having 5 days worth of clothes. Might pack a couple of sport shirts in case we decide to "splurge" at any restaurants (thinking Monterey especially...GREAT restaurants on Cannery Row). I think anywhere else would be casual dining...I'd wear a clean t-shirt and ride in it the next day. Bringing tennis shoes in case we need to do any short hikes at attractions. Bringing a swim suit (for the motel if nothing else). Also packing shorts to "lounge around" in. Packing some long-sleeved t-shirts and a lightweight (but waterproof) jacket for evenings. Probably pack a couple of large towels too.

I have the Corbin Smuggler trunk installed but am packing the passenger seat and a spare helmet in the trailer just in case I get lucky. As a widower, I'm LEGAL! LOL

Bringing a spare battery and a charger just in case.

I watched a show on HD Theater called Mustangs Across America. Wicked show with 200 Mustangs traveling from CA to Nasville TN. They took I-40 over the same route we will parallel. Great scenery

Only 4 MONTHS away....PSYCHED
