Right front wheel noise at 100kph.

So I have just fitted up a new set of front tyres. They were balanced and the wheel nuts torqued. Then took it out yesterday for a run. I noticed a noise from the front right. Ok until around 100kph or so. Sounds a bit like a playing card on bicycle spokes. Constant whirring/flicking sound. Goes away when I slow down.

I thought first I would swap out the fronts and see it the noise moves to the left. Check the pressures are correct.
While the wheel is off I will I will also inspect the inner side of the guard for any sign of rubbing, despite there appearing to be plenty of clearance with the 165/60 R15 just fitted.

Also have a look at the hub. The inner plastic cap was missing when I got it so. No idea how long it was off and it has been remedied with a new inner cap. I did not dis-assemble and repack with bearing grease at the time. Im thinking maybe the bearing needs attention.

The nut with the pin through it, I suppose that if removed allow access to the bearing? Maybe the hub pulls off?? Dunno yet.

Just outta bed and having a cuppa and thinking on this, thought I would share them. Maybe get some tips for later on.

I did have a surf here and ob the u-tube but found nothing on that hub and bearings. So if your aware I would appreciate where to locate it.

I think you've got the major possibilities covered in that lot Iso, altho I am intrigued that the noise is only apparent once you get up to 100kph or so.... that doesn't really sound like anything the 'tire' itself would be doing, more like something being blown into the wheel well - maybe wiring?? Anything loose enough or with enough slack to react that way down there?? Or maybe it just sounds like it's coming from the wheel area?? :dontknow:

There again, is it happening when you're riding straight, or does it occur more when you're turning one way or the other?? Some have found their new tires scrape juuust a little on one of the inner fenders when turning in one direction, which you're already going to look for.... That sorta noise is usually audible at lower speeds & usually only occurs when the tire is still a little over inflated, because the tire is harder & resists flexing more, so once it does flex during turning, the distortion carries further around the tire carcass as it rotates, leading to it scraping on the inner guard toward the rear of the bike as the tire rotates up.... make sense?? :dontknow: Thinking a bit further along those lines, maybe you've got a loose inner guard that's flapping a bit once you get up to a high enough speed - or maybe it's some other panel or placcy bit somewhere that's only flapping once the breeze over it gets fast enough?!

Ok. Re the noise. I was wearing a Shark flip helmet open mode with no earplugs so... Might pop down to the Netball Courts car park and do some maneuvers tomorrow as well. It should be empty and lots of room. Pretty sure it was the front right hub area. Thats the best I can guess. I will do some sharp turns and listen more closely but it wasn't there in the 50k zone at all. So far I have removed both front wheels and swapped them over. I did check for any rub marks, nil. Inspected the guard. All correct and secured. Checked the wires were secured. Before removing the wheel I put a bar under it and levered it some. Looking for any movement. Normal. Rotated the hub left and right with pressure, normal with no slackness. Visually checked the hub, hard to tell but looks normal. Rotated normally. Couldn't really see the brake pads so whipped off the caliper , looked ok with plenty of meat left. Its a chilly 3C in my stand alone bike shed today so thats it out there for today. The temp is dropping and the wind is from the south and building. Back inside and about to light the wood burner. So my test ride will wait for tomorrow when it will hit the dizzy heights of 9C. Haha. So just have to check the pressures are still 18 and holding and I am into it.

:agree: with Peter on this. I think it's a bit odd that up to 100kph you don't notice the sound.... and then you do...... It sounds like you DON'T have Kenda's on it now. ..... IMHO with tires it's generally something that you can feel rather than hear .... A long time ago I had a tire with a BELT failure ... couldn't hear anything , but it sure felt like something Bad had happened .... keep us posted .... Mike :thumbup:

Yep swapped out for a new front set of Kumho Solus. Took it out for a test and heard the new to me noise. Heading for a wheel alignment on Thursday. Crikey 3C 0800 start with a 90 minute ride. To me the bike turns better right than left, I don't think it right, so it's a new to me bike and quite a bit of unknown, but learning fast- ish. I will recheck that pulley and belt tomorrow so I can discount it, or remedy it.

To me the bike turns better right than left, I don't think it right, so it's a new to me bike and quite a bit of unknown, but learning fast- ish. well it appears you have pretty even Brake Pad wear :clap: .... and some tires are quieter than others, even when they are same basic tread style ( ie. summer , winter , or All season ) .... good luck .... Mike :thumbup:

So reporting back. Swapped out the wheel assemblies. Had a real good look to ensure the tyres were seated correctly on the rims. Balance weights firmly attached. Aired up correctly. Checked for fluttering wires, decided to add 1 additional zip tie. I did notice the RHS F4 air wing was slightly open. https://f4customs.com/air-wings-for-f3-touring/limited.html Himm....maybe vibrating a little and with the wind passing through when up to 100kph?? Checked its operation and it was possibly a little loose and slightly looser than the LHS so remedied that. Quick test ride. No noise. Ye ha.

On Thursday I rode 90 minutes up to Stratford for a wheel alignment. Left at 0800 and saw 2*C on the dash most of the way up but was warm and toasty all the way. Yes its winter Downunder. Noise gone. So I really dont know what it was but its gone.

I went and bought some smoko while they did the job. They said come back in about an hour and there it was. All done. The tech asked my how it rode, and I said better 1 way than the other. He said thats not surprising as it was way out. Should be much better now. Majic news for me as I was not really that impressed with the handling and was thinking maybe its for sale in the near future. Its my first Spyder and I bought a thrifty one and thought I would see how it goes. Maybe buy a newish RT later on if I liked it after 50 yrs legal riding on 2 wheels. But I digress. ..

So well worth the journey and cornering like the proverbial haunted snot without having to wrestle it through the corners now. It may be a keeper.
