Vent Cover/Deflectors

In pic #1 above ... that black plastic " wing " thing is where I rest my foot when it's hot outside ..... I made a steel insert that allows me to do this ......CAUTION - without the " insert " you might break it , it's two plastic pieces which are bolted to the plastic frame alongside it ...... I have a 2012 Can Am Spyder RT-SE5 with the same right vent issue. Would this part work for the 2012 as well?

Are both of your right side vent holes open?
though I do wear actual motorcycle riding boots, I still felt the heat until I partially followed Rob's advice in his mods post.

With this vent in the Right side the hot air is vented up at least. I also dremeled out vents in the bottom and back of that radiator surround to allow hot air to flow down below the Spyder. My heat gauge never goes over 50% and I did a Iron Butt SS1k ride on a 95 degree day July 5th with no overheating or even getting above 50%.

I did exactly this same thing on my 2013 RTL. Only very minor modifications needed and an easy install. Made a huge difference. I am assuming that the OP has had the 2013 heat recall work done.

And.....don't you have floor boards ?

If so, doesn't that allow you enough different foot positions to prevent overheating ?
I ride in Florida at 95 F and don't seem to have a problem.......yet.

But, you ride a newer bike that doesn't have the same issue at all that a '13 RT has, The '13's were different than the '08-'12's, and different than the '14's and later.
The floor boards help some, but the "dragon's mouth" issue was pretty particular to the '13's redesigned radiator fan shroud and that it was originally intended for the 1330 engine but ended up having the V-twin installed. I think the 14's and later radiator fans blow the heat forward, where the '13's blow back. That's why your newer bike doesn't experience what the '13's do.

Yes the same part works on '12's, it's more for appearances sake as it fills the top hole with the same grill that's on the left side.

And to answer Joe, (BuckEyeB)'s post, if you install the very modestly priced (under $20) BRP part, the top grill is openly vented and does allow the hot air to vent out so no fire. And as so many have already said, IT'S so easy to order and install the simple part ANYONE could do it.....

2Paw, thanks for buying a MN original boot, funny I live 50 miles from Red Wing, but drove to Wolverine Worldwide HQ, in Rockford, MI to get my zipup laced Motorcycle boots.

For those of us (Myself at least) that routinely drive my RTL (Monster Tupperware covered landyacht of a trike) like it's one of my old Katana's or Ninja's (I owned both back in the day) and routinely are at the top end of the powerband, I don't think I needed to do any additional venting of the radiator shroud and my Spyder has never overheated and I've rode it hard on 95 degree plus days. I do use full synthetic Castrol 4T motorcycle oil now and it burns far less of that between changes than the stock oil, before anyone wonders about that and this mod being done to a '13.

I have the 2013 RTL as well and it can get hot. I did install the upper block off plate from SpyderPops, and I cut a bunch of holes behind the fan on the walls and the floor. You must do that to insure good airflow.

The other thing i did I did was install Lamonster FBB, floor board brackets and pegs. They do spread you a lot but they really allow you to stretch out, change position and such. I also just this week installed a set of the same for a lady that was not so tall, we just adjusted the brackets back a few inches or several. With these you remove your feet from the source.

We did the same to the wife's 2012 RT Limited - at least the first paragraph. Didn't need to make the second paragraph alteration because hers was equipped with Seal floorboards when we bought it. Significant improvement and the temp needle normally sits at about half way along the temperature arc.

Don't tell her but I still like my 2015 RT-S more than hers. She likes it a lot so that's just fine.

Heat was areal problem on the '13's, not so much later. Many Spyder folks have found that my Seal Floorboards give a lot of relief from the heat because the forward bend helps block the heat and you can move your feet so far forward and up and away from the heat. Heat can be a real kill joy.
