Riding Comfort Of Stock Seat & Temperature

Ok, dumb question. Is there any correlation between the outside temperature and riding comfort as it applies to the stock seat on the RT? The weekend I picked up my RT I rode for 3 1/2 hours in 50 degree weather and was very comfortable. This past weekend I rode about and hour and a half in 90 degree weather in stop and go traffic (due to construction) and my backside was "hurting" by the time I got to my destination. Can temperature make that much difference in how comfortable the stock seat is? I've added the utopia backrest, but it seemed as though the hot weather magnified the effect of the pressure points between my bottom side and the stock seat. Has anyone else experienced this effect when riding in hot weather? I know that Corbin seats have a break-in of about a 1000 miles. Is there a "break-in" period with the stock seat?

The biggest thing I noticed this weekend is that the hot weather makes the heat generated by the right side blow torch and the heat coming from the engine compartment get quite uncomfortable and that makes me squirm a lot. It seemed that this made me sore quicker, and I have to stop more often (every hour or so) to relieve both the baking legs and sore rear end.

I wear full riding gear and don't really feel the heat that badly. But my sitter gets hot on any bike when it's in the 90's, and I've found Bead Riders really help with that. They allow a little circulation of air where I need it the most!

Living in west Texas where temperatures of 100 degrees and above are fairly common, I've ridden in high temperatures for years. The heat tends to magnify every other discomfort and just make it worse. Luckily, our humidity is usually low but on a humid day sweating, especially where the body contacts the seat, also contributes to making a seat feel more uncomfortable.

It may seem counterintuitive but wearing relatively heavy pants and insulated boots will help make everything more comfortable. There is enough heat coming off the radiator on the right side of the RT that there's no way I could ride it in the summer with tennis shoes. I wear the same insulated boots that I wear in the winter. It also helps to keep both your foot and leg tucked in close to the bike.

The seat on my RT is still the most comfortable that I have ever ridden but that's just me. The same seat won't fit everybody.

had the same problem on the first really hot days.. now i use a selvemade sport-version (pics my modes) and its away ..
have to say that its much harder than the original - wanted my GS-Seat back (13.000 mls on that) ..also my lady is now happy

So what impact do the beads have on the surface of the seat? Do they leave any impressions if you take the beads off say in cooler weather later on?

We got back from Vintage Motorcycle Days at Mid-Ohio race course last week and I did experience the things you are talking about. The heat is really unbearable lately and it does make your riding much more uncomfortable:gaah:. I too can ride longer when the weather is colder than in the heat. So it does make a difference. I will try those beaded seat pads to help ease my cramping and muscle aches. I definitely have to get off the Spyder more often when riding in the heat.

Butt Buffer

I bought a covered gel seat from Butt Buffer.com last week.
Rode 292 miles Sunday in 90-93 degree Pa heat and humidity, no problems whatsoever.

It works great!!

Never been a problem for me, at least on my BMW's. I haven't used them for very long on the RT-S (maybe 200 miles) but so far they're not leaving any permanent marks.

Sorry we missed you at VMD. Look us up next time. :D

Leather pants question

Don't want to hijack this thread but my question kind of fits in. I am looking at buying some leather pants to provide a little more protection/insulation. I was going to order perfed ones but got to thinking that solid ones might actually cut the heat better. Anyone have any experience/opinions on whether the solid or perfed would be more comfortable/insulating for hot (TEXAS HOT!) riding? Don't think cool weather riding is a factor because the spyder puts out enough heat for almost any conditions I would ride in around here.

I do find more seat comfort when I wear my riding pants. The leathers are the best for saet comfort, but black leathers get mighty hot in the sun. I have not tried perforated leathers, but I doubt they would help as far as the sun beating down on your thighs goes. Mesh overpants seem to be the best of both worlds. Seat comfort...from the extra padding and lack of seams in the wrong places, shade from the sun beating on your legs, and air moving through to help cool you and keep you dry. Some are even available in lighter colors to soak up less heat from the sun, but my black ones work fine.

Heat insulating foil?

A friend suggested putting some heat insulating foil that they use on motorcycles under the seat. My concern is if I use the foil, the heat has to go someplace, and perhaps it needs to be able to dissipate through the seat and into my.. Well you get the idea.
