They almost need parachutes!
Patti,
Re: Skateboards
Did I tell you the story about how my friend and I started the "Wide-Body" trend on the East Coast?
1976: We both decided to give skateboarding a try since it would help to distract us from the rigors of a collegiate education. He was a surfer, and told me that it would be easy!
 He lied...
After buying the typical 6" wide skateboard: I quickly found out that my two left-feet needed more real estate... We took some plywood, cut two 10" skateboard blanks from it, and added a kicktail cut out of a hunk of 2x6...
The other skaters went NUTZ when they saw them!

Pretty soon, we were both sporting 12" boards that we custom cut from skateboard blanks that found found in one of the skateboarding magazines...
Originally we were adding axle extensions onto the trucks, but the accessory marketplace caught up to the new boards quickly!
Skateboarding was fun!
I broke:
Both wrists (in one fall...)
Both feet (one of them twice!)
A fibula
And carried a bruise on my left buttock for about three years!
Ahh... college was fun back then!
