Why would you spend $35 for a stick to jury rig it when you can get a replacement strut and do the job right for $44?

I agree with jcthorne. I have that strut and it is much better than stock. It is a direct replacement.

I have a first aid kit tucked up into the trunk lid which stresses the oem shock. I found a tent pole repiar kit ( roughly 12 dollars). Fiberglass rod cut to length with rubber ends propped in place to add support.... works great!

Why? It might be a case of to each his (or her) own. I disagree that the products Pierre sells are "jury rigged" to begin with, and can attest the product works reliably no matter what we put in the net on the inside of the lid or how much is strapped to the luggage rack on the lid. And, it will never lose its gas charge over time and sag or refuse to keep the lid open.

I did replace the pneumatic struts for the saddle on both our Spyders and we're pleased that the saddle pops open when asked to even if we have gear strapped to the passenger portion. That is certainly an improvement.

I love the idea of the gas shock for $44....but installation? gulp.. not sure i am up for taking the bike apart to do so... tough install?

Open Trunk, look at top inner rectangular panel where you will see three (if I remember correctly on the total) torx screws. Remove and push seat back forward. See, look, there's the bottom part of the strut, plain and simple. Take a small to medium sized flat tip screwdriver and gently insert and twist metal clip, strut will slip right off. Same procedure for top of strut mount. Nice to have a second pair of hands to hold trunk lid but can be done alone. Hope this helps, been a while.

There's mounts on both sides so you can put in two gas struts. That'll hold it up even with the luggage rack on.

This is what I did, carry a 10 lb rollbag when traveling and have had no issues with the lid staying open!
