Ran into kirk on yellow spyder from Chicago

On my way palm springs from San diego I saw a yellow spyder pulled over on side of the road and of course I had stop to say hello
Kirk had trailered his spyder from Chicago to palm springs
We rode together after talkin spyder a bit
When we stopped to fuel I saw kirk pulling the rubber boot of pump up to top off the gas tank yikes
He had topped off the tank to the point that gas was over-flowing out of gas tank before I can stop him
When I screamed "don't top it off" he asked, is that bad for spyder?
I blamed the dealer, salesman and the service
Obviously spyder ryders are not being informed

I plan on buying a spyder next month. Why don't I want to fill it up? I haven't seen this on any other thread.

well since I didn't read the manual ( yeah I'm a guy ) and to save me from digging it out, go ahead and tell us/me why you are not supposed to top it off - a habit I have been doing, without any problem up until this thread

Fuel expansion? Hmmm. If you notice, the tank filler cap is slightly to the side of the tank centre. It's designed like this so even if you fill up so much that fuel is spilling out of the two upper air vents you won't have actually topped off the tank. Stop worrying.
