My $0.02... fire starts at the canister/rear exhaust header, burns the high-pressure fuel lines right above it... fuel is sprayed under pressure on the flames. Then other things that can burn, do... insulation, plastic, seat, etc.

This makes sense to me as to why the fire is sustained after an initial fume burst. I'm due to change oil here soon and I am going to study this a bit further to confirm. But I think you are on the right track...
Might just do a canisterectomy while I'm at it...
