Question for those of you that put RT shocks on your RS's...

:agree:
Seems folks are making this harder than it needs to be. Take the 2010 RT shocks and bolt them up to the RS. Done.

But Lamont, it's our sworn duty to complicate things! :roflblack: :roflblack: Besides, everytime something like this goes down we ALL learn something new. Complications are the spice of life! :D

I thought that was....VARIETY!!:roflblack::roflblack:

Look...get the darn RT shocks and springs and hook them up...enuf said...stop blending, mixing, shaking, stirring, etc...

Where is that great graphic I like so much?....oh, found it!

The RT springs are MUCH beefier ---- and pretty cheap.

When I did mine I ordered the springs, shocks, adjustment cams and top plates-- then had a buddy who owns a local auto repair shop compress the springs and mount them on the shocks.

Then it was just 30 minutes to swap them with my old shocks.

LOVE the ride.

It's Fire's fault that I got the RT shocks and springs and he's da man for this! This is an AWESOME improvement...no question about it!

RT shock install

Took me about 1 hour to change out the shocks. Dealer wanted $90, no thanks. Next time it should take about half that time.

I wrote in detail the progress. FTLOG... I thought I was buying the entire set!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But it turns out I did not. So I wanted to know if anyone else had tried this or not.

Is it really that hard to understand?

We need to have a "Read all of the words in the thread before responding class" :roflblack::roflblack::chat:

You have too many threads and words to keep up with! :ohyea:

*Update*

Ok... As I write this update keep in mind that with the exception of the one bus trying to kill me... I have not taken this bike past 6k rpm's... And have not yet "Tested" it's limits.

This 100% could have been me from the first day I brought this RS-S home. So I in no way say it was this way at delivery or any kind of a BRP issue.

That said... I was very displeased with the cornering on this RS.. That is why I went after a set of RT shocks so fast. Hoping that it would help. Well I picked up my shocks today (Thank you Corey :yes:) from my dealer... Popped open the garage door... Grabbed the jack handle and tugged the RS-S out (Small 1934 garage... SMALL) and noticed the bike leaning to the left (If sitting in the seat).

I oh hummed about it... Started to jack the front of the bike up more... Only to watch the bike start to lean even harder to the left...

:dontknow: Small alarm... Got on my knees and saw that the left plastic bracket mounted to the sway bar was snapped in half. (See pics below)

I called my dealer... Just an $11 part so I ordered two so I can toss one in my tool box for safe keeping.

Anyway... I mention this because I decided to take my bike for a test ryde after installing the new RT shocks with the RS springs... And I discovered two items...

  1. Straight line "Feel" was drastically improved. The ryde was much more to my liking. I would go as far as saying it felt more like the RT... Comfortable and gave a "Stronger" and "Safer" feel to the ryde. Not to say it was not to some degree before. I am just saying it did not take more than a few hundred feet to feel these shocks are night and day better than the original RS-S shocks are. It took the bumps better and the feedback to the bike was far less. Translating into a lot less "Bouncing" of the headlight lights... For a reference... The spring setting is at #3 in both old and new shock test.
  2. The cornering with this broken bracket... Well it must have broken from day one because it took to the turns just like it did before... A lot of roll (To be expected of course) I only mention this because if this was in fact a broken item from me putting the RS on or off the trailer... Or some other wacky thing I could have done. I never would have known that bracket was broken until. A) I drove it hard for the first time. or B) when I finally had enough of the crappy cornering and ordered a new heavier sway bar. The bike goes into and out of the corners right or left the very same. The bike rolls with the center of gravity to the outside of the turn. :lecturef_smilie:

So there you have it... I will give it a good ryde next week when the new bracket comes in for a true test. For the record I think this was my fault. But my dealer is amazing anyway... We argued who was going to pay for the part because we both want to... So I will pay for the part, he will have his mechanic(s) install it for me :yes::2thumbs:

When all is said and done, I think that like the rest of us, you'll find that the RT shocks/springs are much better than stock. I find that I can hit curves a lot harder...I know the sway bar will make that even better (have to get that some day), but for now, the better shocks make a big difference...

Small update...

Drove to the dealership today and had the dealer installthe new Tie-rod (that is what BRP Calls the item that was broken)...:bowdown:

Couple of thoughts... I am not to overly impressed with the RT shock and think I need to get the springs as well in a few months... Plan to tweak on the RS springs for a bit first.

We did crank the RS springs to #4 at the dealership, and my wife commented that the ryde home (40 miles from the dealership) was the worst ever. I have to admit. It felt like we had no shocks (Only springs) and was on an old Ford 9n... No really... It was pretty bad. our hands, feet and butts hated us. The bike felt like it was going to vibrate apart... :gaah:

So I plan to try the #2 setting for a few days knowing I may just end up back at #3 as we had been until today.

Did not get to "Test" the bike today in the turns as we had been two up and I do not like making the wife uncomfortable on new rydes... But I plan to "Test" tomorrow on my way to the office... :ohyea::roflblack:

Ok... Got a couple hundred miles now on our RSS with the RT shocks...

Here is my current "Final" settings and thoughts on this... Keep in mind these are the perfect settings for our situation. When two up we are at about 350lbs in people weight and when just me about 235... Give or take 15lbs for "Stuff" we take a long and when in full gear... Not to mention all the accessories we have added...

Our road conditions are like most towns with government hell bent on their own needs than the roads that make it all work. And we live in a very hilly ish type area with a LOT of curves everywhere...

The RT shocks make the RS respond I would say slower to the bumps in the road (I hope that makes since) and at the same time "Stiffens" the feel to the ryder.

This is what it looks like

Before (All RSS parts)

  • Rear #6
  • Fronts springs set at #4. I tried the fronts at #5 but it was a horrible ryde. Almost needed a 4.5 setting...
After (RT shocks with RS springs up front, all RSS in the rear)

  • Rear... #6
  • Front's #3 For me this is dialed in beautifully. This is with all the tires running the factory suggested air-pressure.
The end results for me are adequate. I see no reason at this time what so ever to get the RT springs. However later this year or next we will get a sway bar for good measures.

So our ryde "Feels" like an RT now, but handles like the RS and that is perfect for what we like in our bikes...:ohyea::thumbup::yes:
