Quart of Oil every 2000 Miles on Spyder RT 2010 -SE5 12K ???

I don't think anyone said they are okay with that but what are you going to do about it? I know Fred Rau's RT didn't use near as much oil as mine, chances are I ride a little harder than he does. There's guys on here that get 26 mpg and some are claiming 34 mpg so what are you going to do about that? Each machine will act differently and everyone rides different and that has an effect of fuel mileage and oil consumption.

If you're not fouling plugs and not blowing smoke or leaving a puddle on the ground everywhere you go then it's safe to say that it's not a serious problem. I don't like it and I don't like my range per tank but I just deal with it.

:agree:

Cold Start Knock Sometimes

I notice that my 2010 RTS will sometimes have a slight knocking noise during cold startup after having set in the garage for several days. Sort of sounds like the noise you get right after an oil change. It goes away in a couple seconds and doesn't happen everytime. Nature of dry sump engine?

My last two oil changes were sent in for oil analysis and both showed normal wear, but 5% fuel in the oil, so I am going the opposite way showing no oil usage. The tech at the dealer called BRP and was told that this is normal in the Rotax motor. This still makes me nervous.

Oil...

I must admit I never checked before 3000 miles thinking that any new vehicle should not use any oil.... I did check it (what pain!) at 3400 ( 2800 after the first service) and was surprised to have to had 3/4 of a quart! Even my Norton Commando does not use this amount of oil between oil changes! I am sure everyone is finding excuses (as for the many problems encountered with these machines) but I do not think this acceptable. But as it was said before: what choice do we have!!!

My dealer changed my oil/filters @ 725 and 3,250 miles. I check my oil about every 500 miles. I have 4,900 miles on BR1 now and never needed to add oil. I check it per the book and do not notice any usage, perhaps just a little. Little to no usage kinda concerns me... I have consistantly gotten 29-31 mpg per my Garmin...somewhat less in a strong headwind. I am switching to Amsoil at my 6,000 change. I will be interested if I get better mileage....

I must be lucky - My 2010 RT never required adding a drop of oil for 21000 miles and I ride hard and fast... Like Lamont says "every Spyder is different"

On the new cars I've had I found you couldn't use syn oil when new. because its to good and wouldnt let enough wear happen to breakin syn will for sure. Burn more oil in breakin due to what Scotty said and due to being thinner the new production processes make the inside of Motors much harder for longer wear so I've found it's best to use Dino oil until 12000 or so to allow enough wear for breakin then switch to syn my motor keeps getting better with miles gas mileage has improved also have seen as high as 41 now that I'm at 14000 with nonmeth fuel and startron on an rs

Doc, I am glad to read this. I don't have the miles you do (4,900) and have not used any oil between changes. Like Lamont says....

You do know depending on which year Spyder yours is, It came with either Full Syn, or a Syn Blend from the Factory?

Early Spyders came with full synthetic and BRP switched in 2010 to the Blend. My tech guy said that BRP felt it was better. Mine still used oil and after two oil changes decided to go to full synthetic and picked Amsoil because of it's 10W/40 blend. It still needs adding but not as much. Those who do not add are Lucky. Hard to believe but it happens I'm sure. Quite a few vehicles do come with Synthetic from the factory with no I'll effects. The cost is the same from BRP's full and blended oil from what I can remember on my GS oil changes. More Profits ??

Oil Usage

My wifes RTs used oil when new , as did her friends. I switched her oil to Mobil 1 10w-40 that I have used in my bikes for years, my 2008 Yamaha Royal Star Venture has 109,000 miles and uses NO oil between changes. My wifes oil consumption stopped in the first oil change and now is barely detectable , we ran this Mobil 1 in both bikes from Texas to Cal. to Alaska and back for 10,700 milesand added 1/3 of a quart to her RTs in the entire trip pulling trailers the entire trip. She now has 42,000mi. and no issues.

My last RT was the same way, not always but I found if I run 70+ for long runs it will use oil. My guess is it makes it's way through the breather and into the throttle body.

I know that where it's going and in 3,000 miles it sucked 24 oz. of oil into my engine. That's why I installed a PCV filter. I tested for over 1,000 miles and ran 70+ mph. for 1/2 of the test and no oil usage and no oil in the airbox. The PCV filters are not new, they have been used on cars and trucks since the 1960's. This is one of BRP's defects that will cost you the most $$$$ in the long run. If you run your Spyder under 55 mph and the rpm's under 5,000 rpms this defect will not effect you.
That's IMHO.

I also used Mobil1 in my GS but not in my RT because the new Mobil 1 has a different rating and is bad for the wet clutch. My GS only used less then half of what I put in my RT.

Mobil 1

I use the 10w-40 mobil 1 listed as high mileage, in the circle on the back the bottom half does not say "energy conserving " other mobil 1 oilsdo and will probably cause issues, have had none with the 10w-40
