Public Enemy #1 in regards to All Things Spyder

That would be ME, Me, me....OK I've only ridden Ms Spyder 65k+ miles since taking possession Memorial Day weekend 2010....I've always whined to myself about the "gas" smell :yikes:...BUT I was always trying to sneak a couple extra squirts of gas in the tank so I could travel just a "little further" between fill ups.....am very sure in that many moons of reading SL's this subject has been covered BUT it never registered with the unteachable part of my brain :lecturef_smilie:...that I was creating the gas smell...basically by filling until it came out the breather slots....well, Scotty posted something just a short while back (and I always read Scotty's posts even tho I don't understand 95% of what he talks about :dontknow. So I said what have I got to lose...30 extra feet of travel?? So last two tanks have stopped before "overfill" happened. Guess what folks? NO GAS SMELL...now isn't that just amazing...NOT...ok just had to share another of my learning curve moments in life.

Same experience here.. use to fill up to the brim... would take a while.. then read what Scotty said and stopped, and no more gas smell..

I see most pump nozzles have a mark about 1" up from the end or I put my finger there when I insert it into the tanks and only fill at 1/2 or less speed until I see the slightest spurt at the 2 upper vents. I have always done it that way and only started getting heavy fumes after the 13 recall fix 1600mi. I smelled a slight odor from time to time before usually after a long ride but nothing like recently. Only reaching 2k right now.

If you do the Canister-ectomy, you can fill to your hearts content with no issues. I can get almost 200 miles between full and empty on my Spyder. I usually go 25+ miles on the triangle full mark at the top of the gas gauge before it blinks out. (Freeway riding)

There are many Spyder owners who don't even know their gas gauge has a triangle at the top because they've never filled their Spyder enough to get it to come on.

I'm not saying everyone should do what I've done. Just throwing it out there as a very viable/doable option.

But PLEASE! DO NOT attempt to mix and match your options.

If you're going to 'Top Off' you need to have your canister removed FIRST.

If you're NOT going to remove your canister, DO NOT top off your tank.

Here's what I do..!!

As Scotty said, fill slowly and stop when it bubbles at the vents. This always shows the full tank all bars and the wedge. I have not had any gas smell since I started this method..hyea:

I have never seen a wedge just full bars maybe I am putting less in than most and still got the drip.It always drops 1 bar within 25mi after I fill up too.

To get rid of the gas smell is to not fill up the tank at the end of my ride, and fill when starting out.

Then, last week I filled up using Scotties technique and went for a very aggressive ryde on one of the Ozarks most scenic routes (US 160 from Forsyth, MO to Reuter, MO). Apparently the sloshing back and forth at high g forces put some liquid gas in the canister because when I stopped, I had a very strong gas smell.

I've found that to be the case on my 2012 rss, on a full tank. also steep hill climbing, up and down a lot seem to produce the smell as well.

Well then getting wedgies might be a cause for gas smell. I have never filled mine to that "point" :roflblack:

Yep that may be true I had a similar experience when I got some gas drips from mine a couple of days ago and none today one was fast (over 70mph) and aggressive today was a little slower 45-55 in some twisties.

Let me say that I am a card caring member of the "yea, thats ok for you guys" club:yikes:. No worries though, inn rear occasions I actually become "teachable". Good to know I'm in such great company:bowdown:.

Cold but fantastic here in Newberg, Or. also. Tomorrow I'm taking my knew knee and riding to Seattle for my GK's "Grandparents Weekend" My grandson gets to ride on the back of my Spyder, for the first time, to the events. Don't know whose's more excited:yes::yes::yes:.
