Proper Tire Pressure???

Flight Risk

GOS member (Girls On Spyders)
First thanks to all who have been so encouraging regarding my "turning" issues. Many wonderful suggestions.
On to tire pressure......for their convenience, my dealership sets all three tires to 20psi. I am wondering what the experienced Spyder RT riders are doing.

I am looking for better turning, tire life, better mpg......

Appreciating your assistance in advance!

I'm a big guy ... 18 front and 28 rear. Check the manual. I think 20 up front is too high and 20 in back is too low. You may feel some "squirm" in the back wheel when you turn.

On the RT I also run 17-18 front/26-28 rear. Twenty in the rear is too low, and 20 up front can make some RTs a little "skittish", although it also can soften the steering response slightly. Everyone likes something just a bit different, depending on their riding style. It is best to experiment a bit, a pound or two makes a difference on the RT. Remember that tire pressures should be checked cold.

I am running 19 front 28 rear on a 2010 RT. Little tire wear at 13K. My service dealer has reset at 13 front and 20 rear. When I asked them reset mine, they did. I would also suggest ( as BRP provids ) a electronic gauge.
I observed a "tech ?" using a car stick type to measure pressure. They were outside the building. It was obivious to even my poor old eyes that the front tires were unequal . I suggested the rider use the provided gauge. and told him about this forum. He thanked me and I got out of there. This was not anybody I did serve with. It was on a trip.
Agree with others about feels right for you.

Another vote for 18/28, at least on the RS, although I've also done 18/30 before (I didn't notice much difference between 28 and 30 in the rear, so I figured I'd try to save the rear tire life a little bit).

I'am 6'2, 248 lbs I run 30 in the front and 25 in the rear my shocks are set at max. I use to run 27/28 in the rear but after 28000 miles on RT and two rear tires changed the 1st one 13k and the 2nd at 11k. I am now running 25lbs in the rear to see what kind of miles I get out of it this time. I rotate my front every other oil change they still look good I'll be riding on them to Cuba this year also.

AIR

I HAVE A KUMHO IN THE REAR AND I RUN IT AT 19 PSI SO IT LAYS FLATTER TO THE GROUND WHICH WILL HELP TRACTION AND MILEAGE....THE FRONTS ARE STOCK AT THE MOMENT AND ARE AT 21 PSI....WHEN I SWITCH TO THE FALKENS I WILL HAVE TO TEST WHAT WORKS BEST.....MIKE...

15-17 front and 28psi in the rear tires are what I run. 21,000 miles on the original front set--and they look good for another year. 13,500 miles on the original rear tire.

When I got mine (Oct 09) 20 in front seemed very popular- But I noticed a trend over the last 2 years to 18 and thats where I am in front. I think they wear more even at that # and turn the twisties better.nojoke Back 26-27 to minimize the center wear.

I run the fronts at 15 psi. I find that I don't like the steering feel over 17 psi and over 19 psi the spyder is too light to make the tires flex properly in a high speed corner. I keep the rear tire at 24 psi anything higher than that and the tire spins too easy on acceleration.

So as to help with my tire pressure question........I'm female so weight telling is not in our genes but maybe weight is a consideration regarding tire pressure. I'm just under 5' 10" and weigh around 150lbs (there, I said it). I have a friend that is my height and weight that does occasionally ride with me. It seems everyone is running lower pressure in front and higher pressure in back. My RT has 1,500 miles on the original tires. You all know I'm also trying to learn to take the turns better so 17-18 front and 27-28 in the back for my initial try??? I also have the suspension set in the middle.......any thought on my height/weight/suspension statement.

Ya'll are the best!!!!!

Maybe one other thing to mention is that you need an accurate tire pressure gauge! I've had some that were off by 2-4 pounds in the range I was using for the motorcycle. If your dealer uses a good high quality gauge then check your gauge against that. I have multiple gauges and periodically check one against the other for accuracy, hoping they won't all go bad at once! :banghead: My most accurate gauge is one from Radio Shack that has a digital readout and voice. It's very consistent and accurate to the dealer readout.

Tire Pressure and great guage

We run 18/28 but do not have the depth of experience of many on this site. Also...I did not feel good about my accuracy of my tire gauge so we ordered a digital gauge from Jegs online for under $35 that is terrific. It has a 10 inch flex hose that makes it easy to check the rear tire.
