possible bad bearings?

yesterday started hearing a squealing coming from the rear wheel area. pretty sure it is from the left side. does it on left turns and sometimes when accelerating. it's not steady. would the belt rubbing on the flange make a squealing sound? anything other than the bearings do this? tks, Merry Christmas folks

How many miles your bike as mine has 53000 and the bearings are still good I have checked them 2 times and you're still good to go, your noise might be the brake pads squealing or your belt

Ours does that, it was the belt. Someone posted about a BRP bulletin about this but I can't find it. It involved putting a small dab of BRP grease on the teeth of the pulley. I didn't have any so I put a dab of synthetic caliper grease on the teeth and poof noise gone.

Agree...

:agree: you put a dab (about the size of a pea) on the center of the rear sproket and it will spread out over eliminating the noise. if not check brakes then bearings...

thanks folks, i'll give it a shot. bike only has about 4,100 miles on it. just got it last month with 3,200 on it.

:agree: +1

And just fyi...it's usually recommended and not a bad idea to go ahead and replace the rear bearings when you put on a new rear tire.

Just check to make sure that your belt isn't rubbing up against the inner flange...
If you can raise the rear wheel off of the ground; check the bearings...

Are you saying that every time one changes a rear tire one should also replace the rear wheel bearings? If so, source please.

Certainly the bearings don't need to be changed at each rear tire change, but definitely should be checked at each of those times, while the wheel is apart.

We've been told that those bearings should be replaced about every 20,000 miles.
Check them whenever you've got the wheel off, and be prepared to change them...

just like my Harley, new tires = new bearings. santa claus brought me 3 new jack stands so the bike is going in the air tomorrow for a physical. tks for the info folks.

Thanks, Bob & Big Arm. I agree that any time the rear wheel is off check bearings and, erring on the side of caution, if there is the slightest hint of wear, replace.

I'm doing bearings with tires too. They are inexpensive and actually make it possible to properly balance the rear wheel once you remove them.

I'm just say'n that since you have to tear it all down anyway, it's not all that expensive to just go ahead and replace them while you're at it.
But then I guess that may only apply if you are the one doing the tear down and not the shop; where you're having to pay their hourly rate.

I'm not home at the moment, so can't put my finger on where I got them, but they weren't all that expensive from what I recall.

YMMV and like I said, just my .02 ...ounce of prevention sort of thing.

The squeal is likely from the belt and grease will fix it.

Here is a list of bearings and seals for the rear wheel of the Spyder. I believe they are all the same no matter the year or model. But verify before ordering parts.

Two 293200094 Seal $9.99 CAD
One 293350065 Double Row Bearing $27.99 CAD
Two 293350067 Ball Bearing $10.99 CAD
One 293300124 O-Ring $4.99 CAD

Those are Canadian prices so the US price should be 20 % less.

I have a full set on hand for every rear tire change and have only ever used the o-ring.

The owner's manual for the 2013 ST list changing the sprocket bearing at 28,500 mi (46,000 km). That's the double row one listed above.
