• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Phone navigation

Hello all,

i see a lot of posts about Garmin GPS products and I understand that is the leader in navigation products. My question is this: does anyone use the GPS that comes with your smart phone? I was in central Florida for 2 months this summer and only had my smart phone for directions. I easily got around in Orlando, Tampa, and Daytona Beach with the verbal guidance and maps on my phone. This would make pairing to a Bluetooth device even easier and I would have my music and GPS all in one system. One ram mount for essentially 3 devices(phone, GPS, music).

I was thinking of doing the same thing. My wife recently got an HTC One V from Virgin Mobile. Interestingly enough, it will handle phone calls via Bluetooth to her Teamset Pro headset but navigation directions don't work over Bluetooth. I've dug around in Google Maps and the phone's setting but I don't see any setting to get the GPS to be audible over Bluetooth :( I'm not sure if it's the phone's Bluetooth version or my headset's version that may be at fault.

We did a 1700 mile ride over Thanksgiving and my wife used her iPhone for the whole trip and was turn for turn with my Garmin.

I bought a RAM mount with clamps for my Android phone and use TeleNav GPS on the phone all the time. You cannot hear it, unless you have a headset connected, but visually you can see the directions and it is very accurate.

My new Galaxy S3 has turn by turn voice nav with bluetooth. Haven't tried to link it to my Scala unit yet but will probably try at some point.

Not positive by I believe that LAmount navigates this way. He stated that all the pictures he's posted in ~ the last year have been with his Iphone camera. :ohyea::clap:

I have the Garmin 665 on the RT but I have used the iPhone for Nav and it works great. I would recommend a good case or at least a bag you can throw over it if you get into some weather. This would be the hot ticket for me.

That does seem cool and the price is pretty darn good...if it works. This is the first review I found of liquipel. But as you know every product has some bad reviews out there.

I have an IPhone and the Sena SMH10 units and use Bluetooth to talk with my wife, GPS voice, music (usually Pandora or IHeart) and can talk on the phone hands free. Works flawlessly. Hopefully this helps.

I just read where liquipel is adding a100% guarantee to their product of you're device is damaged by liquid they will repair or replace it.

What do you secure the iPad with on your spyder?

The X-Mount for the iPad available from RAM Mount as is the x mount for iphones. Be sure to get the right mount for the phone because they ask if you will be using the mount with a case on the phone. Not sure if the mount for the I5 is different from the others.

But the holder is only half the story. You also must find the proper base. Virtually all RAM mount products are three piece: the base, the holder and the piece in between. Its the base that can be a pain sometimes, especially for the handlebars on the RT. I have my iPhone on the left side, a cup holder on the right, and the iPad is in the center. But they are all interchangeable. On the handlebars I have the band clamp. The handlebar has a odd shape, naturally, and a rather large diameter/circumference. Some of the other owners use different configurations. Lamont has his mounts all over the place, even his windshield wing!

I put a outlet box cover mounted to the hub of the handlebar to mount the iPad. Originally I put it there to use with my Magellan navigator from Costco. The only base available was the suction cup and I do not trust those things. I used Gorilla tape to hold the base. It looked tacky but I don't care. Being lost on a $28,000 bike is worse.

The pad will block the display screen on the bike but at 6'1" I can peek over the top without a problem. Screen glare on the pad can be a problem as is temperature alerts if you leave it in the sun for a period of time even at mild temps. But this will be a problem with any glass covered device. The glass magnifies the temp.

Also consider aux power for your device. Any phone that uses location services will use more battery. And it seems more and more apps want to use location services. Would somebody tell me why the flashlight app on my iphone wants to know my location? I'm cheap so I just ran an extension plug in from the rear trunk adapter through the hinge port, under the seat to the glove box area. Be careful of pinch points! I don't use it very often except on extended drives so its unpowered until I need it.

BTW, you do not have to have cell service for the navigation equipment to function because the iPad and iPhone have GPS software, as long as it can see the satellite. You do need the cell service for the extras like where's the nearest gas station, etc.

Not sure

If you lose service don't you lose navigation?

I think the GPS is separate from the actual phone signal strength. I've seen my phone search for GPS location when my phone bars were full and vice versa...it would suck to find out the answer to your question while on the road in an unfamiliar city/ state.
