• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Performance upgrades

Don't post if you don't want comments. If you want to blow up a perfectly good machine, be my guest :)

Hi Tazzel,

I respectfully ask you to please back off this thread. The original subject is something that a number of us have a (non-critical) interest in and would like to discuss rather than get side tracked.

Feel free to start your own thread about the points you want to make but the original author has made it clear what this thread is about.

Thanks and Ride Free,

Jos

Yaz, thanks for the heads up. I am looking at making small (read "cheaper") adjustments first. I was just wondering about any lesser known options, or little things I can accomplish to shed weight without making it look like a half-:cus: transformer:D. I did find several "big bore" kits through Aprillia web sites, but those are a little drastic IMHO. I have a few questions about the drags: Will a stock clutch stand up to double clutching? Is it even worth double clutching? and, Do you know of anyone who makes a supercharger? I am not gonna go slapping one on just yet, but I would like to weigh my options.

And nobody needs to worry, I am not going to blow my spyder up.

Just sayin'...........

Never heard of anyone double clutching at the drags. I know some SM Spyder racers who blip the throttle though.

Don't know of anyone who makes a supercharger for the Spyder. Think it's a one-off thing. The supercharger and the turbocharger basically do the same thing in different ways. Compressing air, then forcing it into the combustion chamber of the engine.

Honestly, if I wanted to do what your goal is, I'd start by opening the engine up and let it breath. You can do it in bits and pieces. It's surprising how much better your Spyder will run.

Once the engine is healthy, then think about slapping one of those puppies on. Because once they're on, there's going to be a whole lotta breathing going on. More robust valves would help too...

Hmmm, I wonder........

What might happen if one were to replace the RS-S ECU with an ECU from an Aprilia 998? The exhaust note sounds the same, so the valve timing might be the same? Anybody with excess cash willing to experiment?

I don't know if it's still available, but there was a 1200 cc stroker kit for the Aprilia version of the 998 --- in Europe. Problem being, most really serious performance upgrades for these engines involve cubic money.

I am looking to make some upgrades to MY 2012 RS-S and finding anything or anyone whom can do what I want is not going well. So I thought I would ask here and see if somebody could point me in the right direction. I know that an intake with a K&N filter, a juice box (or power commander), and a performance exhaust are available upgrades, but I am looking for more. Does anybody know of other options, or mechanics whom can help me in my quest for more power? I appreciate any and all input, thanks.

Just sayin'............

I did some things that helped performance on my 2011 RS-S SE5.

1. Installed BajaRon spark plugs and wires.
2. Mods. to air box, the rubber inlet tubes I cut about 1/3 of tubes off the front (back to the first rib). The part of the tubes on the inside of the air box, on the bottom of the tubes I drilled 1/2 inch holes in all the square ribs on the bottom of tubes.
3. Made and installed air scoops to cool the air box and cool the top of the rear of engine. Read this thread: http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/showthread.php?59856-HEAT-PROBLEMS&highlight=scoop
4. Get the laser alignment to the front end. Adds to the total performance of the Spyder.
5. Use full synthetic motorcycle.
6. Use Water Wetter to the coolant (about 4 oz.).

Have in my hot little hand a K&N air filter and just ordered a Yoshimura R77 slip-on to help with performance.
Also have in hand a pair of bar end weights and a throttle lock for sh**s and giggles. And a new rear tire on the rack waiting for this one to wear out.

Recently installed mirror extenders. Oh, and a Gremlin Bell.

GO AWAY SNOW! So I can move the Spyder from the backyard to the garage where I can get on with the mods! Wanna get all this stuff done so I can ride when the weather breaks. No time for wrenchin' then!

I looked into a couple kits, both of which claimed to have pistons that were smaller (to increase displacement to 1040 and 1140 cc) but had mass comparable to the stock pistons. From what I read that meant there would be no need to make changes to the cam. It did say that a new head would need to be installed, but that the pistons and rings were plug and play. Are these what you are talking about?

Just sayin'............

"Back Off" really? the dude said in his post that he appreciated any input. Are you saying he didn’t really mean "any"? I have a right to my input and I don’t really think it was being disrespectful. I believe he was being disrespectful to me, taking my "input" to another level.
