• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Paint on exhaust coming off - anyone else? Any fixes?

Hope this makes it to you. I bought a new Spyder RT Ltd in early September and noticed bits of paint coming off the exhaust. Today (7th February) I called the dealer to discuss the matter. The exhaust is under warranty, but they say the paint will come off again. The machine has only got 1600 miles on and the dealer is 90 miles from me, so I wondered if anyone has had this problem and how did you deal with it ?
 
Yep. Backside upper around where the part numbers and such are. Haven’t decided on repainting myself or to let it go, yet. Higher priorities right now. Not going to fight with the dealer for a new one. If you want something done right…..

They will replace it for me but I feel that's wasteful so maybe get all the paint off and see if it will shine up
 
I'd think about stripping the old paint off, prepping the surface, and then repainting it with paint designed for high temperature situations.

I quick search of my local hardware store's website found three different brands of paint designed for high temperature applications.

One brand claims it will work in situations up to 1200 degrees F (~650 C) and another says 500 degrees F (~260 C).
If it were me, I'd go with the higher temp paint.
 
Could look pretty good all polished up. Post a pic. Might start a trend.
Looks like the paint will have to come off either to repaint or polish, and I think that if the exhaust is stainless, the paints I have looked at do not stay on stainless. The mechanic where I bought the Spyder told me the paint would come off. Pretty dumb on Can Am's part to make something that is rubbish and then carry on making it all these years.
 
If the exhaust is Stainless Steel, remove the paint, take it to a metal polishing company, and get them to polish it up.
It will look like a chrome exhaust.

Yes, I could get it powder coated but as suggested, there are a few options and I will have a think on them. Cheers Mikey.
 
The best high temp powder coat is good to about 800° F. Ceramic coating much higher. Most ceramic/powder coaters will treat it with stripper and sand blast to prep for adhesion. Not sure how hot a secondary muffler gets? Do you have an infrared heat gun?
 
Not sure what you mean since my exhaust is stainless steel, but I have done many paint jobs on parts that get a lot of heat and also Smokers/Grills/etc built from scrap pile metal. You can get by fairly inexpensively if you use the high-temp BBQ grill paints available at most hardware stores. A step up from that is the hot rod header paints used to dress up old cast iron headers on engines or custom built steel tubing headers. Most of the time you can only find the high heat paints in black, but occasionally you will find red also. Ordering on line will probably get you the best selection. They usually have the upper heat range in the advertisements.
 
On a side note, I took my brand new polished RLS cat delete pipe to a good powder coater/ceramic coater acquaintance in town, who has done many parts for me for years. I showed him my RLS part and asked him about ceramic coating. His response.. Why? He said that the quality of the RLS was too nice to ceramic coat and that it wouldn't make much difference at all with heat reduction. He said he'd do it for $40 but didn't advise it. I shook his hand and left. :)

On my old Spyder and on my new Spyder I use a black permanent marker, works for me. I do have to touch it up a couple times in the summer.

I showed him my RLS part and asked him about ceramic coating. His response.. Why? He said that the quality of the RLS was too nice to ceramic coat and that it wouldn't make much difference at all with heat reduction. He said he'd do it for $40 but didn't advise it. I shook his hand and left. :)

I can see where he was coming from, they usually sandblast the parts before they coat and when the pipes were made someone put a lot of time polishing those pipes, it would be a crying shame to change that, but some people don't like chrome! To each his own!!

My RLS cat delete already came coated with a heat reducing “powder coat.” (I’m not sure exactly what it is.) I think Ricky charges a few bucks more for the coated ones, but I’m sure it’s a lot less than taking it to the secondary market to have it done.

RLS uses Cerakote, which I haven't had much luck with in the past. It costs $50/extra. Getting it done by my local guy would have been $10 cheaper. Oh well ...

Yup ... My coater both sand blasts and chemical treats before ceramic coating goes on.

Mine has over 1000 miles on it already, and still looks great. Heat is noticeably less.
 
I must confess when I said exhaust I meant silencer (you call it muffler).Thanks for all input . I took all the remaining paint off the other day and sprayed high temp paint on. Today sprayed again, and a couple of hours later went for a wee run (15 miles). It was bitterly cold, but as you say, "wind therapy".
