I just returned from riding Harley’s “American Muscle Tour” with 225 participants. Mine was the only Spyder. I have done many of these rides (almost all), but this was the first time I was riding any thing other than a Harley. The Spyder created considerable interest, as it always does, but there were no negative comments. I think the Spyder liked being with the Harleys.
For me the trip was 3,600 miles and 15 days, portal-to-portal. The official portion of the ride was less than 800 miles and 6 days. I rode more miles than that just getting to the starting point. The ride ended in Milwaukee which is 1,500 miles from home.
The Spyder will ride with the Harleys again in September when we do the “Pony Express Ride” from St. Joseph, MO to Sacramento, CA. Once again, just getting to the starting point will be almost as many miles as the official ride. When I finish the Pony Express ride, I will be about 3,200 miles from home, however, I don’t intend to go directly back home. I expect my whole trip to be about 7,000 miles portal-to-portal. Harley has 500 riders registered for this ride. I expect to have the only Spyder.
Originally, Harley wanted to do five of these touring rallies in 2009. They ended up with just two. This is an indication of the state of the economy. When they planned the Muscle Tour, they set a limit of 1,000 participants. They had 225 registrations. The limit for the Pony Express ride was 750. They have 500 registrations. I think the Muscle Tour was the smallest ride Harley has ever done. In the past, most of their rides have been oversubscribed.
I would like to see BRP do some cross-country touring rallies. It would give me a great excuse to ride my Spyder. If not BRP, then maybe Lamont would do it. However, if Lamont organized the ride, we might have to go 1,000 miles per day.
