On the fence RT or RS

Need :helpsmilie:making a decision...
So, if you didn't already own a Spyder, which model would you purchase and why??

Thanx in advance.

**I will be purchasing an SE5, I should've stated that, I meant, an RT or RS**

SE5 because I have ridden both and prefer it. If I had to do it all over again, I would have purchased a used SE5 for myself. Besides, you can find some really good deals on used Spyders right now.

I have owned a SE5 for 3 months now. Love it.

But after I got to see, touch, and sit on a RT-S today, I made my deposit. I would of went for the plunge anyways.

There are many upgrades and improvements on the RT-S. The seating, the way your legs and feet are positioned, handelbars are higher, bigger and wider mirrors, the controls and the dashboard are superb, storage, lightning, adjustable windshield with a touch button, there are just too many to even mention.

I am leaning towards the RT-S PE myself, after seeing a woman sitting on it, I feel better about it. I thought it might be too large, being that I'm going to be riding solo for the most part, thought it would be too much bike.
You looked great! :congrats: on your new purchase!
Did you purchase the trailer?

Tough call! We have an RS and have pre-ordered our RT. I don't know if I could pick just one right now. Each has its own advantages. The RS is sporty as delivered, and has excellent performance. Lots of aftermarket stuff and factory accessories to make it fit your needs. Like swoopy, low and mean...make it into a Phantom with black panels and an ultra sport shield. Like sport touring...add bags and a tall windshield. Lots of choices if you need to change the handlebars. Several seat options, too. Very versatile and sexy machine.

The RT is full dress by comparison. It has an audio system available, unlike anything you can get for the RS, and other integrated communications and sound options available. Relaxed footrest and handlebar position, but they are fixed. No need to add a backrest for a passenger, either, if riding double is highly likely. Lots of storage space, but not quite as versatile (removable) as the RS options. Don't forget the heated grips and adjustable suspension. Rated for trailer use, too. Built for a different purpose and a lot of comfort.

In the end, it comes down to if how you will ride, how far you will usually ride, and if you are likely to have a passenger. It also will depend on the comfort level you need and crave. Unfortunately, you cannot try out both just yet, so your needs are all you can go on unless you can wait a while. Either way, the Spyder is a good choice!

This is really a personal preference kind of thing. I guess as part of the younger crowd the RT isn't even on my radar. While it's a nice machine no question, I have no interest in it. For me, the RS is the only option, and an SM version at that, I love the clutch and shifting. If I could do it all over, I'd end up getting what I already have, a red GS/RS SM5.

The RT is bigger, but I felt very comfortable on it, and I am only 5'5"!!

Did not purchase the trailer. That is on my list for MAYBE next year.

Go for it, you will love it. Thanks :2thumbs:

RS for me

I am 31 and plan on buying the sportier SM5. The main reason is price, but I also love the looks. For me, the Spyder will be a "daily" driver to and from work. I do plan on taking a few road trips with it, though. The nice thing about the RS is that it can easily convert to a quasi-touring model. Buy purchasing a nicer seat, side-saddles, and maybe a seat bag, you pretty much have a touring bike. I also plan on riding alone most of the time. My wife said she would ride around town, but is leery of road-trips. I want the manual because of the "motorcycle" feel. If I end up taking quite a few road trips, I might trade up to an SE5. Though I have heard the semi-auto is nice in town. In the end it will still be an RS.

I'm a 29, 5'5 female. I also was worried about the RT-S not being "sporty" enough, or looking "too old" - but i figured by the time I get a bada$$ paint job that it will look "age appropriate" 4 me, LOL:roflblack:
For the most part I will be solo, but I also plan on taking it on roadtrips, and using it as my primary vehicle when season appropriate, so I would like to be comfortable & have the storage space.

RS is where I'll stay. I actually have more storage on board the RS with my Givi hard cases than the RT offers with it's built in cases.

Sure the RT has far more integrated subsystems like audio, cb, and so forth, but I can get there on the RS and still take my xm radio with me to another bike or vehicle or home dock.

Really just a matter of preference and how much modification you are willing to go through. The RS offers plenty of opportunity to get a unique look and a bike that is customized to fit your needs, yet still be sporty. The RT has a ton of built in comforts, is still sporty looking, but seems like you are stuck with the looks, and stuck with some of the fit and finish more so than the RS.

i had been going back & forth, i actually was stuck on the SE5 RS and just adding the Corbin trunkbox, BRP saddlebags & the Corbin Fairing - i really liked the fact that i could modify the RS to be uniquely mine - what has me leaning towards the RT-S is that i really like what BRP has done with the front of the Spyder. if they put that front on the RS i probably would go 4 the RS. as of now i'm still on the fence, tipping in the direction of the RT-S, i'm gonna give myself a little bit more time - THANK YOU ALL 4 UR OPINIONS & UR THOUGHTS, I TRULY APPRECITATE THEM!! i will be keeping all posts in mind when making my decision & will report back when i do.

depends . . . . .

I ride long distances at times, but I don't like the "tourer" look - on Spyders or Goldwings or BMWs or . . . . . I have thought about it and can honestly say if one was given to me, I would sell it.

Just not my style. If it is yours, from what I have seen and read about, you could not go wrong. I find the features/price ratio to be excellent.

I have always been a "manual" motorcycle guy and love it. My favorite cars were manuals too. The SE5 completely changed that for me. Love the SE5. IF I were getting a RT, it would be a SE - the manual would seem like a step backwards.

So, it depends on what you want.

Although the RT looks nice I still think i would have bought and RS and made it more comfrotable for touring on. I would really like for BRP to make something in between the RS and RT. More like an RS loaded with quick detachables but an upright seating position, cruise, etc. Now THAT is a bike Id be VERY interested in HINt HINT

I have an SE5 and like it.
I will probably get the Corbin Side boxes, smuglers trunk and seat.
That with my adjustable windshield will be my touring machine.
Now if I had it to do all over again :

I prefer the look of the Corbin modified RS to the passenger oriented RT even though I like the foot position better.
+ I am single. -I aint got no passenger.
But if I do get lucky I can always get the second seat and back rest at that time, If I cant talk her into buying one of her own. ;)

My feeling is if you're going to do a lot of 2-up, long distance riding the RT is the way to go.

If you're going to do a lot of 1-up dashing here and there then the RS is the way to go.

As you get further from one spectrum and closer to the other then you just have to decide what you're gonig to do the most of and which kind of riding is most important to you.

Then there is always the tried and true coin flip or dart board to help you out for the really hard decisions.

I have a 2008 GS/RS (unsure of actual classification now) and I am looking to buy an RT-S to sit next to it in the garage. I was hoping my wife was going to enjoy riding with me and she does. So, I want to keep the GS/RS and buy the RT-S for rides with my wife. We purchased all the gear to make the GS/RS suitable for travel (we rode to the owners event in Los Angeles) passenger footpeg extensions, comfort seat, the Givi side bags and A Kury handlebar bag that fits nicely behind the BRP back rest. We have a comm system in a tank bag. It would just be nice to strip all the gear off of the GS/RS and go crazy riding solo, then when my wife wants to ride just hop on the RT-S and go. I am more than willing to dump my car. I gave up my favorite 2500HD Chevy when the price of diesel went wacko here in California and I wish I had it to crush the :cus: car I own now. I have been on the Spyder in a driving rain storm and never was worried about having it get away from me. I love the Spyder. Buy 'em both :D
