• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Oil Strainer clamp

Is there a special tool that is required to secure the clamp on the oil strainer? I am not familiar with this type of clamp. Thanks!

Hey.

There are a few of these on our Spyders (identified in your photo), which are called oetiker clamps (sometimes also called ear clamps) and require a special tool to install (oetiker pliers).

In order to remove an oetiker clamp, the oetiker website suggests cutting through the ear with a pair of their pliers. Other common 'cutting' pliers can be used to remove them.

Once the oetiker clamp is removed it is usually replaced with a worm clamp which can be installed, tightened, (maintained - periodically check and re-tightened) and removed with a common screw driver.

Note that if you are cleaning the oil strainer only the clamp on the bottom of the oil tank is required to be removed, of course.
Hope that helps.

Dean's answer was right on the money. I have an Oetiker clamp kit, but they are costly. The worm clamps work just fine. If nothing else they will prove to your dealer that you performed that part of the service.

:agree: I cleaned my strainer several months ago, and replaced the oetiker clamp with a worm gear clamp, and so far, no problem.

Just be careful to not overtighten the worm clamp as this will cut into the rubber or gas line. The cut out area in these clamps will sometimes be really sharp and flared.
