Oil pressure sending unit bypassed

I've been having an aeful time getting the original low oil pressure sending unit/new digital gauge sending unit (mounted together in a brass T) to remail "leak" free. Been messing with this situation for about 6 weeks. Thought we (2 dealers and a local 4x4 shop) had this solved. The latest fis lasted 10 days. Smnelled a little leaking oil yesterday when I got home. I went out to the garafge today and discovered a leak where the T goes into the block. Treied to tighten it a little and the brass nipple broke off at the block. so I figures, the hell with the low oil pressure sending unit, I'm going to see what happens if I leave it off and just screw the "new" sending unit into the block and hook up its wire. The wire to the original is tucked out of the way. I fully expected the screen to come alive with the sound of Nanny beating me into submission for being so stupid. I turned the key on, let it do its testing thing and it allowed me to go to the start screen. By now, I'm figuring the bike will explode and set the neighborhood on fire. It started right up and no messages questioning my heritage or anything except the normal screens. I jumped off the bike and checked the sending unit and it wasn't leaking, so I rode it around the "hood" for a couple miles and everything seems ok. The digital pressure guage is working and everything seems normal. I know this has to be too good to be true, so I came in, had lunch, finished my latest W.E.B. Griffin book and now I'm going to ride it for a couple hours, unless Nanny pops up out of the screen and smacks me.
HOW COME IT ISN'T GOING CRAZY?? This means that if the original sending unit is installed by itself and the oil pressure goes to almost nothing, there is no message. Is this the way it is designed or is it going to throw me off the road this afternoon when it reailizes there is no low pressure sending unit hooked up? I'll let y'all know when I get back from a daughter's house after scrounging a meal. My wife is in her car, so at least I won't be getting screamed at as I drift off the back roads of Cherokee and Bartow County if Nanny wakes up and throws a fit.

Looking forward to your thoughts on this.

Adapter

Thanks. I've gotten three at the Fastenal place. think that's the right name. I'll stop again and make sure it was the one you list below. Rode 100 miles this afternoon and no leaks and no Nany - that part has me really confused.

Mine was leaking for a while, the oil light would never come on the dash while waiting to start or otherwise, and I always had to turn the key on and off twice before it would start. It threw no codes and the Buds didn't show anything either. Seems to me if I actually would have had an oil pressure issue it would blow up before the it threw a code, kind of baffling to me.

I originally set mine up that way, the only downside is you will not get a warring light if you lose oil pressure so kept an eye on the gauge till you figure out what is normal pressure for your bike.

Oil pressure gauge

I ran both until yesterday, my write-up. Now it's digital only and I've only ridden 100 or so miles. But I've been watching it since the end of Nov. I guess the oil low pressure light is like the gauges for the temp and gas tank. Disconnect them and they just disappear as far as the warning system is concerned.
Oil pressure is a pilots friend and I've been watching them for over 50 years. Got my wings in Pensacola on Jan 31, 1962. Boy, seems like a long time ago!!

Thanks for your info. Happy to know someone else is doing the same thing, discarding the low pressure sensor. Long ride to meet friends for lunch today. I've got my essential tool bag, the original sending unit and several adapters also. Hopefull none of that will be required.

You can not use a standard brass tee because the threads are not the same you need to get an adapter......it's the TPVW

http://208.109.215.220/files/gauge.pdf

The Rotax has 10mm threads and pretty much anything else we can get here is 1/8"npt. It will thread in but it's not right and shouldn't be used.

The Spyder will run without the sending unit hooked up. That was a test we did when I had my first oil change in 2009 on the RT, they had me run it without the oil sending unit hooked up to see if the light would go out.

A gauge will tell you when you're having problems, a idiot light pretty much tells you you're screwed or will freak you out when nothing is really wrong other than you have a bad sending unit.

Thanks

Thanks to all who filled in the squares for me. Guess I'll have to get one of those TPVW adapters for my digitasl sending unit. Don't want thast thing acting up any more, but it is just fine this micro-second. Idiot lights are indeed the cause of ignorance. Like L said, they tell you after the explosion or what ever has happened. I have had oil pressure gauges in/on most every vehicle I've ever had. It told me when to sell of my beloved 1949 Mercury too. Oil pressure near zero is not a nice thing to experience. Sure enough, one year later it gave up.

One more good day this week in GA, then rain most of the rest of the week. Of course, it might be ok, but the prognosticators seldom admit that.
:banghead:Stay dry.
