Looking for some insight...Just purchased a Spyder GS SE model 2009 ( bought it used...low miles ) really like the bike.hate getting at the airbox :(. Any how, once I did get at the air box to check and clean the air filter I noted some oil in the air box, not allot and it was very clean. My question is, does the lower crank vent to the air box and could this be the cause of this oil. The day I noticed it I had been riding a few hours previously and it had been very very hot ( 95 degress + )Thanks All

Yes, what your getting is commonly called blow -bye, Do a search, It's an easy fix.
I just put a sugar cube size piece of porous foam in the tube.
And Some do it the Rube Goldberg way.:dontknow:

NEWBIE

Welcome Aboard,:congrats:...As bob said plug it or route by hose into a catch-can. Right now the oil vapor is going into the throttle bodies and yes it will burn,...but I stopped mine from doing it....plus the oil will contaminate the stock air filter in short order and ruin it.....it you had a K & N it would probably be OK they have to be oiled anyway....but it would still be going into the throttle bodies....Mike..

I have 20,000 Miles and Yes sometimes a few drops of oil get in the left side of the airbox BUT never on the filter.
I see nothing wrong with the stock set up. If you put a little too much oil in it will be released in the air box .
Sometimes I think the fix can cause MORE problems than the Stock Intention.nojoke

STOCK INTENTION

Yes Sarge707 you are somewhat correct..........but what happens when the DEALER overfills your Spyder and ruins the AIR FILTER and denies doing it.???????????????????.....HUH........I THINK FIXING THE PROBLEM IS BETTER THAN HOPING FOR THE BEST.......But you do what you think is best...Good luck.......Mike

Oil in the air box is bad for your engine. I made a filter for mine it keeps the oil in the engine and only lets the vapor burn like in a car. It's called a PCV filter. Get a K&N filter and that will be the last filter you will have to buy. If you want my design PM (private message) me with your e-mail address and I will send it to you pic's and material list. You can get all materials at Lowes. The K&N filter at http://www.amazon.com/CM-9908-Can-A...=1-1&keywords=k&n+air+filter+can-am+spyder+rs . I have bin using my PVC filter and the K&N air filter for over 8,000 miles and no oil in the air box and it gave me a better running engine. That's IMHO.

I change my own oil! I like stock components?:roflblack:

Good Day and good riding to everyone....Thanks for all the feedback on my somewhat small issue.

STOCK COMPONANTS ..?????

I CHANGE MY OWN OIL ALSO....PUROLATOR IS NOT A STOCK COMPONENT HOWEVER.....DID YOU KNOW THAT

I feel the Purolator "Pure One" $10 at Advanced Auto is the Best for me as it is Better than stock!
1-Micronic Filtration
2-Double the intake (Air) Capacity
3-Oil wetted
4-95.6% Efficiency
5-Can improve milliage by 10%

I have seen K&N,s on jetskies for over 20 years and they can require a jetting change and let More crap in than the Purolator.
Also, If your not a Mechanic PEOPLE can tend to "over-oil " the Filter in which case its much worse than stock!

Its Nice we ALL have opinions and "No-One Goes to Jail!":roflblack:

I wouldn't use a K&N on the Can Am for the simple reason they let more air, and thus more fine dirt particles, thru to the TB. With all the trouble many of us have with Throttle Bodys being replaced, more dirt is not what I want.

So Purolator "Pure One" has the about same flow rate as K&N (I looked it up). In the Can-am Spyders the computer controls the fuel injection (there are no jets to change). It all comes down to what filters people want to use, they are both much better that stock Spyder air filters, it's good thing we have a freedom to chose.

Not sure a PCV valve is the way to go for the Spyder. A PCV valve is simply a one way valve, it is NOT a filter. PCV stands for Positive Crankcase Ventalation. It is designed to vent ONLY Positive Pressure from the crank case. It will not releive Negative Pressure.

It is my understanding that our Rotax engine requires both positive and negative pressure ventilation. That is why our vent system is open to air movement both ways. If you install a PCV valve you will not get negative pressure releaf.

You may be resolving the oil in your air cleaner issue but you may be creating a bigger problem by using a PCV to do it. There are proven systems that allow ample air movement in both directions while keeping oil out of your air cleaner. You would probably be better off to use one of these.
