oil not filling up!

Hey,

Was changing my oil for the first time today and everything was going smooth till now! I was filling the oil and got to 2 1/2 quarts before it stopped taking anymore. What would be stopping the oil from flowing?

Thanks!

Please tell me you drained the old oil from from the bottom of the oil resevoir as well as the engine ??? There are two places you need to drain the oil from.

Hahaha Yes the oil was drained... Wasnt sure if maybe it was a filter install issue or a hose that sometimes collapses.

They should have watched

They should have looked at your video!! Thanks again for the detailed disassembly!

Yep, two drain plugs, however, you saying that you get plenty out so there are three hoses at oil reservoir, check if you didn't bend any of them.
If that's not the case, don't get me wrong, I don't want to be rude nor undermine you but there might be a chance that you put one or both of the filters backwards which would create a plug?
I am sorry Bro but you need to drain it again and check/reposition filters anyway just to be sure and rule it out.
Let us know, sounds interesting.

Def not taking it as rude, im here for the help! And what video would you be referring to Dtryke? Would like to take a look at it to ensure I didnt miss anything.

:agree: check oil filters, if both are in correctly you might need to pull that screen in the oil resevoir. Get a clean pan so you can drain the oil and put it back in when your done.

Click the link under my signature it will take you to my oil change thread. It take a minute to load and I have an SM5, it's basicly the same.

I am not trying to question your work here or anything, but are you real sure you didn't put in 3 1/2 quarts and just miss seeing an empty bottle...or at least put in closer to a full 3 quarts? The reason I ask is that the Spyder's oil tank will not hold the entire 4+ quarts needed. You need to dump in 3, then start the engine to fill the filter cavities, oil pump, and passages...then put in the rest of the oil. Your manual covers this procedure. If you were close to the three quarts, or over, I'd start the engine and run it a few seconds, then check again and fill the remainder. Remember not to fill to the "Full" line with the cold oil. You will need to get the Spyder to full operating temperature (not just normal water temperature) before finalizing the oil level.

:agree: I have to run the engine for a few second to get the oil out of the oil tank and into the engine. It only takes a few seconds. I do this until the oil level is stable.

I still think there is another issue. I put 4 quarts of oil in even before I start the motor so I know it will hold it.

I agree, that's the way i've always done it. ''If'' the two filters are backwards that's about 1/2 quart.
Now ''if'' only the oil tank was drained, and NOT the crankcase, That would seem more like the cause.:dontknow:

It won't, always. I usually put in 4 quarts straight away, but a couple of times it has overflowed at a bit over three. Probably a function of the oil pump rotor position. Starting the engine cures it.

Just to be sure the horse we are beating here is completely dead.

You removed 2 drain plugs, 1 at the bottom of the engine crank case, and one at the bottom of the oil reservoir (where your dip stick resides), and you drained each completely. And you also removed and replaced 1 Engine Oil Filter (the large one) and 1 Transmission oil filter (the small one).

I am always able to put a full 4 qts. into my reservoir on an oil change. I just put them in without measuring anything. Then I run my Spyder to operating temperature (at least 3 bars), park it on flat ground, let it set a minute or so and then check oil level. I usually have to add about 1/4 qt. to bring it up to the full line.

Understood, that makes sense. I would like to know how this guy made out because I'm curious to know. BTW, Happy Birthday Scotty !!!

I thought the trany had a drain plug also?

You are correct, though little known, there is a drain plug for the Transmission oil filter (Check out #5 & #6 below). I don't think anyone actually uses it, but it is there. Why? Probably because originally BRP recommended changing the trans filter every other oil change. They still wanted to get the old oil out. So, this little drain plug was designed to get the oil out without removing the trans filter.
