Oil light came on , Limp mode I think

I just picked up my 2008 GS from dealer after winter storage . Had them install a new Yoshimura R77 pipe . They changed the oil before putting it away ., it ran great for 40 minutes getting home and then still good after sitting for a bit and going for a ride but 10 minutes into that ride the oil light came on and can't get engine over 3500 (approx) rpm . Tried turning off and restarting a few times but still won't clear .,Could it be the new pipe or improper oil level . What is common with this Spyder people ?

Is there any oil in it?

So lots of oil and no oil pressure. If the low pressure is real. Something broke in the engine and continuing to run it will just make the damage worse. Another possibility is the oil pressure sender failed or wire came off giving a false low oil pressure signal. You will need to figure out which one it is.

It may be sensor or wire I guess , it runs ok and there is no indication of anything wrong unless I try to go over 3500 or so rpm while driving , it starts cutting out every time at that level . Will have to get back to the Dealership asap

It is in Limp Home Mode. There are two types. Rev limited or speed limited. It is trying to protect itself by limiting rpm.

Sounds like the same thing that happened to my 2012 RT, the mechanic said a gasket failed and the engine did not have any oil in it. Oh the oil tank was over full on mine too.

A gasket failed ? And what was the end result , replace gasket or engine damage ?

They ordered some parts and it's still at the dealer so no end result yet. I suspect that the engine had some damage because when mine failed I was going up the I-310 bridge over the Mississippi and with construction there was no place to pull off till I got it off the bridge and it didn't sound good as I pushed her over the bridge.

Let's see....

I would bring the oil level below the full mark. Restart the engine and let it warm up at idle and recheck the level and see if the light goes out and things are normal. if it still comes on and stays in limp mode then move on the oil pressure sensor, wire or run it back to the dealer...

Do an actual oil pressure test

You need to take the oil pressure sending unit out and install a manual gauge to get an actual oil pressure reading...Hopefully its just the pressure sending unit...Anything else will be a major fix..

If the oil tank is over full then the engine is empty and you should not run the engine until it is fixed. A broken sending unit will not over fill the oil tank only a mechanical problem will.

Hope it's minor

Thanks guys , I've only had the Spyder a year now so this forum is a big help in learning the typical behaviours etc of these machines . There was only 5000 Kms on it when I got it and is at 15000 now . Since I just spent almost $2000 dollars on exhaust work , oil change , winterize and storage etc I think I will use my CAA card and get it trailered back into Toronto to the dealership . This (light coming on) occurred a few times last year but would go back to normal by turning off and restarting . Hope:riding:

Make sure you follow the directions in the owners manual to check the oil !!!!! The proper way to check the oil is DIFFERENT than ANY other vehicle I have ever owned !!!!! I have a RT and, overfilled the oil because I didn't follow the owners manual !!!!! FYI = my dealer ( VERY knowledgeable ) told me even if the oil level is overfull it will NOT harm the engine ( Which AGAIN is different from almost ALL other vehicles !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hope this helps !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Update

Have you found out anything yet?
Yes , sorry guys been out of town doing a crazy short schedule job for a couple weeks . I've been talking with the mechanic at the dealership and he is certain it is the pressure sensor switch ... So have ordered one and waiting for arrival . This time around I will trailer it to the dealership to make sure there is actually oil pressure and have them install ( torque properly) the sender and check it over a bit before running it anymore . Thanks again for all the responses , I will update again as we solve this little setback

It's alive !!!

Spyder is back home after trailer haul to dealership and seeing the doctor ., as suspected the oil sensor showed a code but also O2 sensor . Replaced both ( $97 ) and runs great now . The new Yoshimura pipe is a little louder when on the throttle but really seems to loosen the power and up a bit. Thanks again to everyone for the info shared
