• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Oil Level Check Frequency

Lots of discussion on oil change frequency, but how often are people checking the oil level. I have been checking it every 300 miles and have added a few ounces when it starts to get below the half way mark. I try to run it below the full mark as I don't want to overfill. Also, is it just me or does anyone else have trouble reading the dipstick? I can't always get a clean read on that black plastic. As a check, I use a 1/4", 12" long wooden dowell that I stick into the oil tank. It seems to be full at 8" and low at about 7".

As I have alway donewith all of my bikes, I check it before any long run (anything over 100 miles) but like you I aways have trouble reading the dipstick level, I have to hold it upright in a rag and walk out side in the light and try to see it, a simple improvement would be to make it a lighter color, white would be nice for instance..So far I have added about just over a pint since the 600 mile and the 3000 mile oil change that I just did on Thursday.

I figured I wasn't the only one having trouble with the black dipstick. I even wrapped a piece of white adhesive tape around the dipstick to try to get a better read before I went to the wooden dowel check method.

I would have liked it a whole lot better if they would have put a site glass in the side of the oil tank. Maybe even something thats visible without taking off the lower panel. Even with those quick release screws, its a pain to take that panel off and on.

As far as oil check frequency, I check it "every so often" and before I go on a long (300+ miles) trip or anytime I happen to take that panel off for any other reason.

Amen! Easy to accomplish, fast, and accurate. My Beemer has a bullseye sight glass and a matching hole in the fairing to peer through. I may have to lay on my belly to see through the hole because it is a wet-sump system, but it is still far easier than the Spyder procedure. Too bad this mod would involve oil tank removal. Easy to put a hole in the right place and weld in a bung for a screw-in sight glass. Maybe one of the accessory manufacturers will start making them up for exchange.

Try drilling a couple of small holes in the dipstick. Pull it out, wipe it off, oil leaves holes. Check oil, oil stays in holes, you know where it is.
