• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Oil Change

I decided to do an oil change on my wife's 2011 RS SE5. We bought it used from a deal and it has 5156 miles on it. Given the miles it my not be due but it can't hurt and at least I will be sure when were are in the oil's life.

I found this on the plug magnet. I wonder how worried I should be.

I told the parts guy that I preferred full synthetic and so he sold me the full syn oil and filers, etc for the same price as the kit that comes with the synthetic blend. I wanted to use Amzoil but couldn't find 5w40 locally and I only have small window of time to get this done.

The one concern I have with the BRP full synthetic oil is that it says right on the bottle is that it is designed for BRP products operating in cold temperatures. This bike will never be operated in temperatures I would consider cold.

I noticed a significant difference in the filter that was in the bike compared to the new one. The old ones had an embedded screen like you find in K&N air filters. The new ones are just a paper filter.

Obviously they gave me the wrong filter here.

Those look like the old filters for the SE5 transmission. Ill see if I can dig up a pic of the 2.

Let's see..!!

in warmer weather you can go to the 10/40w amsoil. As for the filters the newer ones come with the wire frame to keep the folds from colapsing. BajaRon (sponsor here carries all what you need. Don't know what material those particles are so hard to say if it is serious. :dontknow:

Here is a pic of what Lamont posted a while back showing the old and new filters with part numbers. Hope you can read it.uploadfromtaptalk1439528123485.jpg

If I remember correctly, I don't always, someone a long while back posted pictures of debris that look alot like that and nothing came of it. Maybe do a search or someone else can find it.

Using BRP's Full Synthetic 0W40 will cause no harm. Also is one of the recommended oils for the Spyder on xpslubricants.com web site. But really their intent was for it to be used in their snowmobiles so they will start at 30 below.

As others have pointed out you have the old style filters.

WARNING, the bolts that hold the filter caps in place look the same but are different lengths, Don't mix them up.

The material you found in your oil-change exercise looks like thread. A caliper could be used to take a good guess as to what size bolt or bolt thread it was. The bolt will be slightly smaller than the metric size... such as M10 will be 9.8mm (just estimating) and the thread will be a tad over 10mm such as 10.1mm. In any case, I would guess there is no real problem.

Castrol makes a full synthetic 5w40 oil with a SL rating.... pretty reasonable price $43.80 delivered for 6 qts.. (ordered the oil from Amazon). and for oil filters on the 2014 spyder HiFlo makes a filter its #HF556.. prolly who makes the filters for BRP they look the exact same).. as for the O-rings... I went to my local supply house and bought a complete set of O-rings for less than $4.00 which included a copper sealing washer for the drain plug..

When I had my Set screw on the magnet issue I also had some of what you have on your magnet.

This is what Shawn Smoak from Pro Caliber said about that.

"That looks like the clutch actuator clip that always fall off after going into two or more pieces. It doesn't seem to do anything other than ease assembly of the clutch when servicing... Seen lots of those on magnets."

Do not use those filters. They are junk, not to mention they gave you the wrong trans filter. It won't work at all.

If you use Amsoil go with 10/40. It's a much better viscosity for your Spyder anyway. 5/40 is fine if you plan to park your Spyder outside in sub-zero temps overnight. Otherwise, 10/40 is a better way to go.

You should also look into getting a complete seal replacement set. BRP piece-meals these so you'll most likely need to get them 1 at a time if you get them from the dealership. You'll need 2- O-Rings and 2- Copper Washers.

I don't understand dealerships handing out bad parts like this. Those filters are the reason BRP went to the new design.
