Oil Change Drain Bolt

clueless

New member
in process of Oil change and the dealer over tightened the engine drain bolt at the 600 mile svc :banghead:

Lamont is there anyone coming to Spyderfest that will be selling the better drain bolts that I can use a standard socket on? or better yet is there B&M store that sells a drain bolt that will fit? what size? would Advantage Auto carry one?

have to wait for dealer to open on Monday to get a replacement bolt for the Oil Storage tank drain. that one I got out but stripped the head of the bolt :cus: ... they had it too tight. the engine plug I tried to remove but it started to strip so I held off ... will need use the bolt remover on that one and replace. but right now just leaving it in.

changed the filter and torque that one properly ...

so after I replace the one bolt and refill the oil = I can leave for Cuba, MO Tuesday ...

thank... but I need something today as the current bolt is out but stripped the head getting it out.

so choices are:

1 = OEM replacement drain bolt from dealer
2 = a store like pep boys or advantage auto to get a bolt at least with a socket head instead of the Allen key head

as the spyder is on the jack stands right now with no oil in it and we are leaving for Cuba, MO tomorrow

I think that web site mentioned above gives the bolt size you would need, look at their spyder page. If you have a kawi or yamaha dealer near you could compare your stripped bolt to their's if they have any in stock (maybe M12x1.5)

Yes write those sizes down and go to any local autoparts store they should beable to help you. That is what i did.

yes but need them NOW today so I can get the Spyder on the road to Cuba, MO tomorrow :gaah:

maybe something quick fix and hopefully Lamont has a vendor there that sells the magnetic bolts for next oil change

Won't help you now, but for anyone else...I use an Allen socket for a 3/8 ratchet and a 6" cheater pipe extension to remove the plugs. Be sure the socket is FULLY inserted into the plug. One little tug and the plug breaks it's bind. The tightness of the plug is not caused by the dealer over tightening it, but the result of the torque/washer reaction to being properly tightened.

:agree:The copper washer acts like a lock washer' It's supposed to hold tight' Imagine if it didn't? I'm NOT saying in this case,
But in most cases the cause is using the wrong tool' Or the right tool with out seating it properly. Can't blame the dealer all the time.

well found a standard plug at both Autozone and Pepboys...

I ended up just replacing the one that I had out "the oil tank plug".

I put in the Pepboys 15x1.5 plug and a new 15 copper washer and torque to spec 20 nm ... filled up with 5w40 motul and seems to be holding no leaks. i let the rest of the oil out via the filter. left the engine plug in for now as it is stripped. will order the gold plug when i get back from spyderfest but for now time to button up the panels and pack the luggage

Glad you got it under control. I am in full agreement that the plugs ought to be standard metric, not Allen metric. They would be a lot easier to remove and re-install.
